Kyle Russell went long.

Chance Wheeless went short.

The Texas pitchers successfully went in and out.

And it all mattered.

The Longhorns needed every advantage they could get Friday, as they played long ball and small ball to upend Oklahoma 4-3 in the opener of a three-game Big 12 Conference baseball series at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

“When it’s a one-run game, everything kind of plays into it,” Texas coach Augie Garrido said. “You really can’t separate one thing from the other.”

Every time Texas (24-8, 6-1 Big 12) went ahead, Oklahoma (20-8, 2-2) came back.

Wheeless, the team’s best bunter, took a chance and laid down a perfect bunt single with two outs and the bases loaded to give Texas a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

“It wasn’t the typical situation to bunt in — bases loaded, two outs — and nobody was expecting it,” Wheeless said. “So with a good bunt and reasonable speed, anybody can make it to first.”

Garrido said it was a heads-up play.

“If the player doesn’t put that on himself, it never works,” said Garrido, who will send Adrian Alaniz to the mound at 2 p.m. today to face the Sooners. “If I put it on, it scares the hell out of them.”

Oklahoma came right back in the third with a home run from Joseph Hughes.

The game was tied 2-2 in the fifth inning when Russell laid into a pitch and became just the 32nd person in Disch-Falk history to hit a home run over the center-field monster.

As Russell was heading back to the dugout after his 17th homer of the season, he got a hug from catcher Preston Clark, who accomplished the feat earlier this year.

Was it a welcome-to-the-club hug for something so few have accomplished?

“No, I don’t think so,” Russell said. “That’s just how Preston and I roll. We’re good like that. We’re always attached at the hip.”

That was enough for Texas’ James Russell (6-2), who pitched five-plus innings before turning it over to the bullpen, as the Horns’ staff outdueled Oklahoma starter Stephen Porlier (4-2).

Porlier helped the Longhorns extend the lead in the seventh.

With Jordan Danks on third, Porlier briefly pulled his hands apart while standing on the mound. The balk gave Texas a 4-2 lead.

“What was unfortunate about that is we were getting ready to have him step off because we were going to (Nich) Conway right there,” Oklahoma coach Sunny Galloway said. “I was up, tipping the cap, getting ready to go, and I heard, ‘Balk.’ ”

That was the advantage Texas needed as Pat McCrory, Keith Shinaberry and Randy Boone combined to give up one run in the final three innings.

McCrory’s 1 2/3 innings allowed the Horns to use Shinaberry against left-handed power hitter Joe Dunigan in the eighth inning with a runner on base. Shinaberry struck him out and handed the ball over to Boone, who picked up his eighth save.

The Western Carolina Catamounts picked up a 7-3 victory over The Citadel Bulldgos in a key Southern Conference showdown. Barrett Shaft got the Catamounts offense going by giving them a 3-4 game with 3 runs scored from his lead-off role in the lineup. Tyler Sexton pitched 8.0 excellent innings to get his fifth victory of the season against no losses. Wes Wrenn got the loss from The Citadel and drops to 3-3 on the season. The teams continue their series with a first pitch scheduled at 4:00 pm.

FSU 15 Duke 3

The Florida State offense continued their slaughter on ACC pitching with a 15-3 victory over the Duke Blue Devils in Game 1 of their weekend series. Tony Thomas Jr. had three hits on the night including two homers. He hit his first homer to lead-off the game and hit his other homer in the second inning when the Seminoles tacked on five runs. Bryan Henry continued his strong pitching by going six innings while giving up two runs. The victory tonight was his seventh consecutive to start the season. Alexander Hassan picked up his first collegiate loss by giving up nine runs in 2.2 innings. The teams will continue their series on Saturday with Game 2 with a battle of Tallahassee with native sons Michael Hyde facing Tony Bajoczky at 2:00 pm.

UNC 3 Wake Forest 1

Robert Woodard pitched an absolute gem on Friday evening to take the opener of their weekend set with Wake Forest by a score of 3-1. Woodard went 7.1 innings while only giving up two hits with one of them being a home run for Michael Murray. The homer was Murray’s first career round tripper. Brad Kledzik pitched 6.1 inngs while giving up all three runs. He gave up a two-run homer in the first inning to Dustin Ackley who continued his hitting streak to twenty games with the homer. Andrew Carignan struck out the side in the ninth to get his seventh save of the season while Robert Woodard goes to 6-0 on the season. First pitch for Game 2 is scheduled for 1:00 pm.

Virginia 3 Virginia Tech 1

The Virginia Cavaliers headed across the state to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies and walked away with a 3-1 victory. Jacob Thompson started the game for the Cavaliers and went seven innings giving up six hits but only one did damage in Luke Padgett’s seventh inning homer. Tim Henry led the Cavs offense with a two run double int he second inning then was driven in by the next batter Greg Miclat to account for all the scoring in the game. Greg Fryman pitched a complete game but picks up his fourth loss of the season. Jacob Thompson now is 7-0 and Casey Lambert got his seventh save by striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth. The teams will continue tomorrow with Game 2 at 1:00 pm on RSN.

Miami 10 Clemson 3

The Miami Hurricanes used a 13 hit attack to easily handle the Clemson Tigers by a 10-3 score. Yonder Alonso hit two homers to lead the Hurricane attack while starting pitcher Eric Erickson was strong in his six innings of work and only gave up three runs to get his fourth victory of the season. The teams will continue their series at 7:00 pm.

NC State 24 Boston College 4

The North Carolina Wolfpack used a 24 run performance from their offense over the final six innings to blowout the Boston College Eagles 24-4 on Friday. This was Boston College’s first home game of the season but they were rudely greeted by the Wolfpack offense. Mike Roskopf went 4-6 with two homers and six RBIs to lead the Wolfpack bats. BC starter Kevin Boggan gave up ten runs in his 4.2 innings of work to give him an overall record of 2-3 on the season. NC State starter Eric Surkamp went six innings while giving up two runs. NC State pitcher Joey Cutler picked up a save by working the final three innings which was his second save of the season. BC and NC State return to Shea Field on Saturday with first pitch scheduled at 1:00 pm. The College Baseball Blog will have two staff covering the game on Saturday.

Georgia Tech 5 Maryland 4

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth off of All-American closer Brett Cecil to pick up an exciting 5-4 victory on Friday evening. The game was tied as they entered the top of the ninth with one out Steve Braun hit a solo homer to put the Terps up 4-3. Georgia Tech was able to tie the game on a Danny Payne single to center field in the bottom of the ninth with one out when Luke Murton stepped to the plate and proceeded to hit a single through the left side of the infield to drive in Jeff Ussery with the winning run. Brett Cecil picked up his third loss of the season while Brad Rulon gets his first victory. The teams continue their series with the first pitch at 1:00 pm.

The Citadel Bulldogs will head to Cullowhee NC to take on Western Carolina in a big Southern Conference showdown. This will be the first time all season that the Bulldogs will leave the state of South Carolina. They were originally scheduled to head to Minnesota earlier in the season but couldn’t get there because of a major blizzard. The Citadel is led by Zach Brown who is hitting .337 with seven homers and 22 RBI on the season.

I was able to get permission to copy the following article from RockChalkTalk but it is slated heavily towards KU but is a good preview of the Missouri-Kansas series.

KU will be in Columbia this weekend playing a three game series with the Missouri Tigers. MU is off to a surprisingly good start, carrying a 20-7 record (2-1 Big-12). The Tigers are ranked in two of the four national polls (#25 and #28), and their RPI ranking of #32 justifies these optimistic placements.

I say “optimistic” because it seems to me that Missouri and K-State are 1st-half only teams. I have only followed Big-12 baseball for a few years but already I’ve been fooled by these teams getting off to good starts and then fizzling two years in a row so now take a cynical view of their long term prospects. Maybe 2007 will be different and MU or KSU will keep their steam up as they move into April and May. We’ll find out soon enough.

Regardless as to past history, MU looks very solid right now and the Jayhawks will need to be on their game to win this series.

Missouri in a nutshell
MU has not played an easy schedule this year, five of their seven losses have come to teams ranked in the RPI top-100. Against these upper teams the Tigers are 7-5.

KU fans have many reasons to dislike Missouri. Last year the final game between the two teams got out of control breifly in the conference tournament. Both benches emptied in the 2nd inning when Ryne Price hit a homerun and found an Missouri player unwilling to surrender the base pads as he rounded third.

One more reason to not love Missouri is their team website which does not list player On-Base or Slugging averages. Even without full information a few Tiger batters having solid years can be identified .

As a team the Tigers are hitting .277, with an unknown On-Base and Slugging percentage. They are scoring 6.8 runs per game so they are getting it done at the plate. This is a bit hard to understand. Their batting average is not very high, they have only hit 10 homeruns in 27 games, and their running game is good but not great at 36 stolen bases. Of note on the above list is the struggling Jacob Priday. Priday is a two time All Big-12 selection, last year he lead MU with 11 homeruns and 49 RBI’s. Is he styling for the scouts this year? Has he been hurt? Whatever the reason for his struggles let’s hope he doesn’t discover the cure this weekend.

As has been the case over the last several years MU’s team strength is their pitching. The team ERA of 3.06 is phenomenal at the NCAA level. All three starting pitchers KU will face are having great years. The Tiger bullpen is also well-stocked. Kyle Gibson appears to be their closer, having already recorded five saves and put together some very solid numbers. 33.2 innings, 19 hits, 5/35 BB/K ratio.

Missouri has not lost a home game this year (10-0) and are coming off a big road series win at Nebraska. KU needs to win a conference series badly and there is no sweeter place to do so than in Columbia, Missouri. Marks and Ashwood both pitched fairly well last week vs. Oklahoma State and Czyz has been solid all year. All that has separated the Jayhawks from a winning Big-12 record this year has been the lack of a few big hits in key situations. Let’s hope it all comes together for the team this weekend and the Jayhawks start the second half of their season strong.

Florida State at Duke

The Florida State Seminoles will leave the state of Florida for the first time this season when they head to Durham NC to take on the Duke Blue Devils. Florida State enters the series with a 27-1 overall record and a perfect 6-0 record through two weekends of the ACC portion of the schedule with sweeps over Wake Forest and Boston College. Tony Thomas Jr. is the leading hitter for the Noles with a .482 batting average on the season. Bryan Henry is the considered the ace of the staff and has a 6-0 record and a 2.37 ERA which is the highest of the weekend starters for the Seminoles. Ryan Strauss with a 1.57 ERA and Michael Hyde at 1.74 have both been dominant from their spots in the weekend rotation. Duke enters with a 19-9 overall record and 1-8 in the ACC. They picked up their first victory last Saturday when they beat Georgia Tech by a 3-0 score. Jimmy Gallagher leads the Blue Devils with a .356 batting average while Nate Frieman is right behind him at .351. Freshman Alexander Hassan leads the Duke pitching staff with a 2.10 ERA in his six appearances. The College Baseball Blog predicts that Florida State continues their undefeated ACC season with a sweep of Duke.

Wake Forest at UNC

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons will be taking a roadtrip this weekend when they visit the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Demon Deacons picked up a loss this week to Winthrop by a score of 15-9 to give the Deacons an overall record of 14-13 and 3-6 in the ACC. Wake Forest is led by Allan Dykstra who leads the team in average at .378 and homers with 12 on the season. The Wake Forest weekend pitching staff has been ineffective with Brad Kledzik leading them with a 4.91 ERA. UNC enters hitting the ball extremely well as they got 28 runs from their offense in a 28-3 drubbing over Davidson in their only mid-week game of the week. North Carolina’s overall record is 23-4 and 6-3 in the ACC. They are lead by Dustin Ackley who is hitting an outstanding .495 on the season for the young freshman. Alex White has the lowest ERA out of the weekend starters at 1.91 but Robert Woodard is right there at 2.35 to provide a strong 1-2 punch. The Virginia Cavaliers will travel across the state with their 24-5 overall record and ACC record of 5-4 to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies for a big weekend series. The Cavaliers are led by the .447 average of Brandon Guyer and Greg Miclat who is hitting a hefty .433 on the season also. The Cavaliers top pitcher has been Jacob Thompson who leads the weekend staff with an ERA of 1.83 and a 6-0 record. Sean Doolittle has gotten off to a slow start on the mound with a 4-2 record and a solid ERA of 3.20. Doolittle is also hitting .300 on the season which is down from the .324 he hit in 2006. The Hokies enter the series with a 15-11 overall record and 4-5 in the ACC. They picked up a loss to James Madison on Tuesday. They are led by first year head coach Peter Hughes who bolted out of Boston College after the 2006 season. The top weekend starter for the Hokies is Adam Redd who is 2-1 with an ERA of 3.68. The top hitter for the Hokies is Nate Parks who is hitting .336 with Sean O’Brien at .323 in the second spot on the team batting average list. The Hokies are a running team as they have attempted to steal 64 bases and successful on 43 of them while their opponents have attempted 31 and only been successful on 22 of them. Miami at Clemson

The Miami Hurricanes enter this series against Clemson with an unheard of 15-12 overall record and 3-6 ACC record. The Hurricanes are entering the series after a week long break after losing two out of three games to Virginia last weekend. The Hurricanes are led by Yonder Alonso who leads the team in hitting with his .374 average. Freshman Eric Erickson has been the most consistent weekend starter for the Canes with a 3-3 record but a very good ERA of 1.58. Clemson enters the series coming off a 15-6 victory on Wednesday over Western Carolina and a 14-2 victory on Tuesday over Gardner-Webb to bring their overall record to 17-7 and ACC record stands at 4-2 after a weekend sweep over Duke and losing two out of three up at Maryland. Clemson is led by a strong offensive attack which is hitting on the season as a unit at a strong .293 batting average. Brad Chaulk is the leading hitter at .425. The top weekend starter has been P.J. Maryland at Georgia Tech

The Maryland Terps will travel down to Final Four country this weekend for a three game set against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Maryland is coming off two midweek victories in which they beat William & Mary on Tuesday by a score of 15-3 and then followed that on Wednesday with a no-hitter in which they beat Coppin State 12-0. The Terps have an overall record of 18-8 and 5-4 in the ACC. They are led by Freshman A.J. Casario who leads the team in batting average at .371. The top weekend starter has been Ryan Moorer who is 3-0 with a 2.29 ERA. The Yellow Jackets swept Georgia Southern in a quick two game mid-week series by scores of 10-2 and 6-2. They are led by All-American candidates Matt Wieters who leads the team with 28 RBI and Danny Payne who leads the team in batting average at .412. John Goodman has become the most consistent weekend starter for the Jackets as he enters the weekend with a 1-1 record and an ERA of 2.84. NC State at Boston College

The NC State Wolfpack will head to Boston College this weekend for a key ACC showdown. The Wolfpack enter with a 19-8 overall record but 5-4 in the ACC. They are led on offense by Joe Florio who is hitting .345 on the season. Ramon Corona is continuing to struggle at the plate with a .223 average. He struggled in teh Cape Cod League in 2006 with the Hyannis Mets where he hit .236 for the summer. The top pitcher for the Wolfpack weekend rotation has been Freshman Jimmy Gilheeney who is 2-1 with a very healthy 1.84 ERA. The biggest prospect of the season in terms of height and hype was Andrew Brackman who enters the series with a record of 4-2 and an ERA of 3.79. Brackman has been roughed up over his last four starts as he has a 1-2 record and an ERA of 6.26 over that period. Some people were talking about Brackman’s fastball hitting 99 MPH this summer on the cape. Boston College enters the series coming off a 10-7 victory over Holy Cross on Thursday and a 6-5 victory over Hartford on Tuesday. Boston College has an overall record of 8-11-1 and 4-5 in the ACC. The Eagles are led by two sport athlete Johnny Ayers who leads the team with a .369 batting average. Tony Sanchez is second on the team with a .365 batting average. Kevin Boggan leads the pitching staff with a 2-2 record and an ERA of 2.57 on the season. The College Baseball Blog predicts BC to take 2 out of 3 games this weekend.

The Boston College Eagles knocked off Holy Cross 10-7 in non-conference action on Thursday. Boston College was led on offense by Michael Belfiore who hit a homer run in the top of the eighth to set up the final scoreline. Geoff Oxley got his first collegiate victory by throwing three scoreless innings. Dan Houston picked up the save by working a scoreless ninth. The Eagles will be back in action on Friday when they host NC State in the home opener at Shea Field. Holy Cross will host Navy on Saturday in the first Patriot league contest for both schools.

Rice coach Wayne Graham had one thing to say about the Texas Longhorns.

“If their pitching comes around, they are the best team in the country,” Graham said. “I don’t think there is any doubt about that.”

And that was after Texas committed three errors Tuesday.

That also was after the Longhorns were held to eight hits and six runs, both below average.

Despite all that, the ninth-ranked Longhorns beat the eighth-ranked Owls for the 10th consecutive time, winning 6-4 in front of 5,133 fans at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

“It’s because they did those things and they still won,” Graham said. “We walked a couple of batters and hit a couple of batters. But even something as little as that means you’re not going to beat a team like Texas.”

The Longhorns didn’t play the perfect game, but they always had an answer.

Rice took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning, when Kyle Russell misplayed a fly ball by Rice’s Chad Lembeck with a runner on first. Russell picked up the ball and, as Lembeck raced around the bases, threw it into the Longhorns’ dugout for an unearned inside-the-park home run.

Texas responded as Travis Tucker led off the bottom of the inning with a single, and was driven home on a double by first baseman Chance Wheeless, who was 3 for 5 with two RBIs.

“I think all of us are feeling really good at the plate,” said Wheeless, who raised his batting average to .380. “We put in a lot of work, and I think all that effort is really showing up in our ability to hit the ball and our offense.”

Wheeless helped Texas (23-8) add to the lead in the sixth inning with a single up the middle that scored Nick Peoples.

It was 5-2 after six innings, but Wheeless helped the Owls (19-10) jump back into the game.

With runners on first and second and one out in the seventh, Wheeless failed to come up with a ground ball by Jess Buenger, helping Rice cut the lead to 5-4.

“That ball was really spinning on me, and I thought I came up with it,” Wheeless said. “It was just one of those things.”

Texas designated hitter Russell Moldenhauer responded in the bottom half of the inning by hitting his second home run of the season.

“One of the reasons we are able to respond so much is every practice we practice playing every inning individually,” Tucker said. “No one inning is more important than the others.”

As for the errors, Texas coach Augie Garrido isn’t too worried.

“Those things happen. It’s baseball,” Garrido said. “The players are going to make mistakes, and then they’ve got to clean them up.”

Like the pitching staff, which struggled against Kansas State on Sunday, giving up 11 runs and 17 hits.

Tuesday was different, as Austin Wood (4-0), Pat McCrory, Joseph Krebs and Randy Boone, who got his seventh save, allowed just six hits and one walk. They also didn’t give up an earned run.

The Maryland Terrapins held Coppin State hitless and used a balanced attack by scoring in seven out of their eight at bats to continue the Coppin State losing streak to 20 games. Mike Murphy went 2-4 with 3 RBIs to lead the Maryland offensive attack. Brett Curll, Tim Kearney, Brett Jones, and Nick Pearce all went two innings without allowing a hit while Brian Shellhamer pitched a perfect ninth to complete the no-hitter. Maryland will visit Georgia Tech this weekend for a big ACC series.

The NC State Wolfpack received a stellar pitching performance from Nate Karns, Jeff Stallings, and Sam Brown who combined on a three hit shutout. The Ole Miss Rebels defeated Southern Miss at Trustmark Park in front of 6,217 fans by a score of 6-5. This was the Eagles 3rd consecutive loss while Ole Miss picked up their fourth win in the last five games. Cody Overbeck hit a one-out sacrifice fly to right field to get the victory for the Rebels. Cody Satterwhite picked up his second win of the season while Eagles closer Patrick Ezell got his first loss by pitching 2/3 of an inning.

FROM NCBWA RELEASEDALLAS - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending March 27, today. Florida senior first baseman Matt LaPorta was named National Hitter of the Week, while Saint Louis senior right-handed pitcher Eric Rohr was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

LaPorta was a sizzling 7-for-13 (.538) in the sweep of No. 21 Auburn with seven RBIs, three homers, three doubles and was hit by a pitch four times. Florida notched its first road sweep since May 20-22, 2005, at Vanderbilt and collected its first league series win on the road since that trip to Nashville. The Port Charlotte, Fla., native went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a pair of doubles on Friday, 1-for-6 with a homer on Saturday and was 4-for-4 with four RBIs, three runs, two home runs and a double on Sunday.

Rohr earned a pair of wins on the week after tossing 13 shutout innings in two games.  The Belleville, Ill., native registered a complete-game shutout on March 20 in the Billikens’ 1-0 win over Tennessee-Martin, allowing just five singles and one walk. He pitched four innings of one-hit relief on March 25 as Saint Louis edged Charlotte, 6-5.  Rohr finished with eight strikeouts for the week.

With this week’s honor, Rohr automatically is named to the watch list for Roger Clemens Award, given to the national collegiate pitcher of the year, sponsored by the Greater Houston Baseball Organization.
