No. 10 Texas used 10 extra-base hits to post a 14-3 win over Kansas State in Big 12 baseball action Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The win was Texas’ ninth straight and moved the Longhorns to 22-7 overall and 5-0 in Big 12 action. Kansas State fell to 17-6 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Travis Tucker led UT’s offense going 4-for-4 with one triple, one double, one stolen base, three runs scored and two RBI. Preston Clark went 2-for-4 with one double and three RBI. Chance Wheeless, Bradley Suttle and Josh Prince chipped in with two hits apiece.

Kyle Russell’s torrid home run pace continued as he hit his 15th on the season. He has hit a home run in five consecutive Big 12 games and now holds the Longhorns’ record for most homers by a sophomore.

On the mound, Adrian Alaniz (7-1) scattered three hits and one walk over seven shutout innings while striking out six to earn the victory.

Texas scored two runs in a first inning in which the Longhorns batted out of order. Tucker hit a leadoff single. Wheeless, who was supposed to bat third, singled to put runners at the corners. Jordan Danks, who was slated to bat second, hit an RBI single to plate Tucker. Suttle drove in Wheeless with a single. The batting out of order infraction was not caught until the second inning so all the at-bats were official, staking Texas to a 2-0 lead.

The Longhorns added three runs each in the second and third inning. The second inning featured an RBI triple by Tucker and a two-run single by Clark. The third inning was highlighted by an RBI double by Nick Peoples and a two-run single by Wheeless, inflating the Texas cushion to 8-0.

Texas tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning with a solo home run by Russell and an RBI single by Tucker.

A triple by Suttle followed by a ground-rule double by Clark accounted for a run in the fifth inning and the Longhorns owned on an 11-0 lead.

Texas finished its scoring with three runs in the eighth inning thanks to a two-run triple by Jeff Boes and an RBI double by Clint Stubbs.

For the second consecutive night, Kansas State rallied for three runs in the ninth inning. Drew Biery hit a two-run single driving in Eddie Vasquez and Daniel Dellasega and J.J. Muse plated Biery with a sacrifice fly.

The Wildcats’ offense was paced by Derek Bunker who went 3-for-4. Biery went 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI.

Chase Bayuk (2-1) was saddled with the loss for Kansas State. He allowed seven runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out three Longhorns over 2.1 innings.

In addition to the 10 extra-base hits, Texas drew 10 walks and was hit by two pitches in the contest.

Texas and Kansas State wrap up the three-game series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The three hits off Preston Clark’s bat weren’t game-changing.

They were just needed on a personal level.

No Longhorn was in search of a big day like Clark, the starting catcher, and he found one Friday in Texas’ 10-3 victory over Kansas State at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

Clark went 3 for 3 with two RBIs, including a home run in the fifth inning that gave Texas a 2-0 lead.

“This feels great. I really needed this,” said Clark, who entered the game hitting .273 after a slump ate away at his formerly .400-plus average. “The past month has been difficult. I really didn’t feel comfortable with my swing, and I was thinking a lot at the plate.”

Goodbye struggles. Goodbye slump.

Hello confidence.

“I knew he was ready to break out,” Texas coach Augie Garrido said. “It was just a matter of time.”

Clark and Bradley Suttle, whose three-run homer in the fifth inning gave the Horns a 6-0 lead, provided plenty of offense for starter James Russell (5-2), who gave up five hits and three runs, all scored in the ninth inning.

Russell had faced just 26 batters heading into the ninth inning, getting five strikeouts in the process. “If you hit your spots in the early innings, it’s easier to get them to chase pitches later on in the game,” he said.

He had help when the Wildcats (17-5, 0-1 Big 12) did make contact.

Right fielder Kyle Russell made a couple of great plays, including a diving catch in the sixth inning, and every time the Wildcats hit a ball hard, a Longhorn was there to catch it.

“They go get the ball,” Kansas State coach Brad Hill said of the Texas outfielders. “It’s not easy to get a hit. If the ball’s in the air, they’re going to get to it. We’re going to have to hit the ball a little lower and a little farther.”

It’s been that way all season.

“I think you are going to see that all year,” said Garrido, whose team will go for its ninth straight victory today at 2 p.m. against Kansas State. “There aren’t going to be many teams who are more athletic than us.”

Texas, on the other hand, didn’t struggle to get hits.

The Longhorns (21-7, 4-0) pounded out 12 hits and have reached double-digit totals in hits 18 times this season. It was ninth time the team scored 10 or more runs.

Kyle Russell hit his 14th home run — a two-run blast in the seventh — to tie the school record for home runs hit in a season by a sophomore.

Suttle had two hits.

But Clark’s hits show everybody in the lineup is swinging the bat well.

“I think I’m finally out of my slump,” he said. “Getting out of a slump is not easy. But me and (Nick) Peoples have been taking extra swings and spending more time in the batting cages trying to work on things.”
