Start in Tempe with Oregon State and Vanderbilt. Close it out with UCLA visiting Fullerton. You might have to violate several physics laws to make it happen, but if you make all the games in between, you’d witness the greatest non-conference road trip of all time.

Boyd’s World has put together a list of all the top non-conference games featuring teams with top 50 ISRs between February 22nd (the date of the OSU-VU matchup) and May 20th (when the Bruins travel to Fullerton). I’m still not quite sure of Boyd’s ISR system and its built-in West Coast bias, but there’s hardly a game on the list that isn’t must-see CBB.

Pedro Alvarez of Vanderbilt has been named the Pre-Season National Player of the Year for the 2008 season by Louisville Slugger.

Joining Alvarez on the first team are Pitchers Jacob Thompson (UVA), Preston Guilmet (Arizona), Anthony Shawler (ODU), Brian Matusz (USD), Josh Satow (ASU), Scott Gorgon (UCI) and Reliever AJ Griffin (USD). Rounding out the infield are Brett Wallace (1B, ASU), Blake Stouffer (2B, TAMU), Johnny Giavotella (2B, UNO), Alex Buchholz (SS, Delaware) and Buster Posey (C, FSU). In the outfield are Dominic De la Osa (Vanderbilt), Kyle Russell (Texas) and Brad McElroy (Charlotte). Josh Romanski of San Diego made the first team as a Utility player.

For those who are wondering: Yes, Ryan Flaherty earned 2nd team honors at SS, though I’m wondering how Vanderbilt’s Mikie Minor was not deemed among the twenty-nine pitchers selected to the three team All-America list which can be read here.

The CBB continues their series of articles previewing different conferences throughout the country. This week we check in on the Patriot League. Lafayette won the Patriot League title by sweeping Army in the Patriot League Championship series after Army knocked off Navy in the opening round of the Patriot League playoffs. Lafayette lost to Virginia 5-1 and Rutgers 11-10 in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. The 2008 season will be the first time that the Patriot League will allow four schools into their postseason tournament which will consist of a best out of three semifinal round followed by a championship series the next weekend. When I got up this morning and noticed that we had a clear blue sky and the temps were hovering around 45 degrees I knew that I need to drive down to Disch Falk Field to get my Baseball fix in for the week. As I was walking around the Stadium taking pictures of the renovations going on I got to thinking what this season will bring to the world of College Baseball Fans.

Could Oregon State make it back to the CWS and when their third in a row. Or will this be the year that North Carolina breaks through. After winning the 2003 Championship, can Wayne Graham and the Rice Owls get pas that hurdle and get to the Championship Series. Could we also see teams that have not been in a couple years make it back like Texas, Miami, or LSU. What about the Cinderellas teams from last year, UC Irvine and Louisville do they have enough to recreate that magic to get back to OMAHA. Doug Kroll of CSTV.com and has compiled a list of the top five second baseman for the 2008 season. His top five 2nd Basemen are;

1) David Adams from Virginia, batted .372 for the season and his fielding % was a slick .973 with only 7 errors on the season.

2) Brandon Turner play for the Bulldogs of Mississippi State. He played in 55 games and started in 51. Brandon batted a cool .399 and had a fielding % 937 with 11 errors last year.

3) Aaron Luna seems like he has been at Rice forever. Aaron is entering his 3rd year at Rice and last year he batted .315 and had a fielding % 976 with only 4 errorrs.

4) Jemile Weeks plays for the Miami Hurricanes. Jamile batted .298 and had a fielding % of .974.

5) Alden Carrithers led the UCLA Bruins in batting with a .352 batting avg. His fielding % was a .964 with 9 errors for the season.

KU Baseball has been a new type of animal since the arrival of Ritch Price five years ago. When Price inherited the program the Jayhawks had struggled through five straight losing seasons and not made an appearance in the NCAA tournament since 1994. Under Price the Jayhawks have a record of 171-144-1 and fought their way back into the post-season by winning the Big-12 tournament in 2006. During this time Price has overseen tremendous improvements to the baseball facilities (almost entirely financed by private donor contributions) and watched two of his former players quickly reach the majors. Last month Price received a national pat on the back by being named one of Team USA’s coaches. KU has a nationally respected baseball coach who has transformed a dormant program into a player on the national scene. Read the rest of this entry »

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Arizona has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s Fabulous 40 pre-season NCAA Division I poll.

The Wildcats have their strongest team since winning national championships in 1976, 1980 and 1986 as nine position player starters are back along with seven superb pitchers from a team which finished second in the Pac-10 Conference a year ago with a 42-17 overall record. The College Baseball Blog recently had a chance to talk to John Cole who is entering his third season with the Penn Quakers. They won the Lou Gehrig division in 2007 but were swept by the Brown Bears in two games.

1. In 2007, Penn had a great season in the Ivy League by going 12-8 in the conference but finishing with an overall record of 20-19. The Quakers return a veteran squad as seven out of the nine starters from the 2007 Gehrig Division championship team return.
