Thoughts on Opening Day

I will check in as often as I can throughout the year to bring our loyal readers some highlights from various games across the country. Our first installment is below.

We had one of the best games in recent memory between Rice and Long Beach State last night which was won by the Dirtbags 1-0 in ten innings. Rice pitcher Ryan Berry went seven strong innings while allowing five hits and striking out eight batters. Long Beach starter Andrew Liebel outpitched Berry as he lasted eight innings also only five hits and one walk while striking out 11 batters. Danny Espinosa drove in the only run of the game in the bottom of the tenth inning with a single to left field.

One of the other great pitching performances was from Lance Lynn of Ole Miss who struck out the first eight batters and finished with 12 strikeouts while allowing only one hit in five innings of work. The Ole Miss squad finished the game with a team total of 21 in a 8-1 win over the Gophers.

The Army Cadets ended up getting swept in Day 1 action at the UTSA Tournament but the biggest news was Cole White getting taken out of the game in the second inning after rounding third base. White was expected to be a major contributer for them on the mound and was one of the top hitters for them in 2007. Mitch Harris of Navy did not play in the Navy’s doubleheader sweep over Air Force. Does anyone know why Harris has not stepped on the field yet?

Our final game to check in with is the battle between Richmond and UNC-Wilmington. The Spiders were able to pick up a 23-16 victory over the Seahawks led by Ryan Metzroth going 5-5 with two homers and six RBI. The teams combined for 33 hits, ten homers, and 13 players had multi-hit games.
