Brookline, Mass. - Matt Rogers’ decisive eighth inning home run powered Harvard to a 7-6 victory over Northeastern in the Crimson’s regular season finale Wednesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.

With the score tied at six and one out in the top of the eighth, Rogers connected on the first pitch the saw from reliever Dan Zehr (1-4) for a no doubter, high over the scoreboard in left-center for his third long ball of the season. Bethune-Cookman 10 South Florida 3

TAMPA, Fla. - The University of South Florida baseball team lost, 10-3, to Bethune-Cookman Wednesday night at Red McEwen Field.

The Bulls drop to 25-21 overall while the Wildcats improve to 30-17.

Junior Chris Rey was 3-for-4 in the game with one RBI and a run scored, while junior Addison Maruszak added a two-hit outing to the Bulls’ offense.

Freshman Zach Pietrzyk made his longest start, and appearance, of his rookie campaign against the Wildcats, striking out two in his 4.1-inning outing. He allowed five runs from seven hits to take his second loss of the year. Read the rest of this entry »

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Sawyer Carroll’s five-RBI performance boosted the No. 16 Kentucky baseball team to a nine-run rally, soaring from a 6-0 deficit and notching a 9-6 win over the red-hot Marshall Thundering Herd - its 23rd non-conference win in the past 24 games - on Wednesday evening at Cliff Hagan Stadium.

After starting every game of his college career - a span of 98 consecutive games - Carroll was scratched from the starting lineup in order to take a final exam, in Italian. Carroll, a National Player of the Year award candidate, completed his final exam around 7 p.m. ET as Kentucky made it through the first 1 ½ innings. By 7:15 p.m., Carroll was standing in the batters box as a pinch hitter, finishing the night 1-for-3 with a career-high five RBI. On the year Carroll, who leads the Southeastern Conference with a .431 average, has totaled 63 RBI in just 45 games, good for a tie for fifth place all-time on the single-season UK record books. The NAIA University of British Columbia Thunderbirds have been making an annual trip to Seattle to play the Huskies since 2002. UBC has usually had five or six Division I teams on their schedule, but this year, due to the late February start of the D-I schedule, this was the only D-I game that could be arranged.

The Thunderbirds’ only win against the Huskies came in 2006, the year that the Birds made their only trip to the NAIA baseball national championship. They were on the losing end of a four-game sweep against the #2-ranked and defending NAIA national champion Lewis-Clark State last weekend, but the Birds generally played well against the Warriors. UBC outfielder Matt Chester was injured during the Lewis-Clark State series, and the Thunderbirds currently have two other key players unavailable due to injuries, outfielders Mike Styrna and Nic Lendvoy. The 14-4 win for the Huskies wasn’t a surprise.

DeLand, Fla. - Third-ranked Florida State (36-7) registered its seventh consecutive non-conference victory with a 13-3 win over Stetson (19-27) Tuesday night in front of 2,751 at Melching Field, the eighth largest crowd in stadium history. The Seminoles reached the double-digit run plateau for the fourth straight game against the Hatters outscoring Stetson 60-9 during the stretch. Outstanding individual performances have earned several ‘newcomers’ a spot in the lineup. Josh Harrison of Cincinnati boasted a perfect 10 for 10 effort. Old Dominion’s Anthony Shawler tied a school record with 18 strikeouts in one game. LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Tyler Mickits hit a two-run home run and Matt Lea, Neil Holland and Zack Pitts combined on a three-hit shutout, as the University of Louisville Cardinals blanked Morehead State 2-0 Tuesday at Jim Patterson Stadium.

After catcher Jeff Arnold reached on an infield single to lead off the fifth inning and moved to third on a throwing error, Mickits belted his first home run of the season deep to right center to put the Cards (27-16) on top 2-0 for the only scoring of the game. Read the rest of this entry »

FORT WORTH, Texas - Matt Vern’s bid for the game-winning home run fell just short of the left center field fence and the #5 Texas A&M Aggies escaped with the 3-2 victory over the TCU Horned Frogs Tuesday night. A school-record 4,294 fans were on hand for the tightly contested game. The Aggies picked up an unearned run in the top of the ninth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Was this the game that turns Texas season around? Could this jump start them to the Tournament?? The verdict is still out them but, this was a game in the right direction for Texas. Everything Texas did went their way in this non-conference game against Texas State. Texas State came into the game batting .336 as a team but, Kenn was entertaining other ideas on the out come of this game. Kasparek threw 113 pitches with 9 strike outs 12 ground ball outs and that would just leave 6 fly balls for the outfield. The tempo of the game started in the first inning when SS David Hernandez went deep into the hole to take away a hit threw out the lead off batter at first. The following is a scouting report on the Texas Tech Red Raiders from Aman Reaka who watched them play against Kansas on April 11th-13th. We will continue to bring you scouting looks at certain teams throughout the season.

JR Roger Kieschnick 6′3, 215, RF
Kieschnick is a stud hitter with plus power who should be a first round pick in June. He is a true and legitimate power hitting prospect. He played for Team USA and even tied Pedro Alvarez for the team lead in HR’s. He is hitting .307 with 11 HR, 36 RBI, 10 Doubles, 21 K’s and 26 walks. Crow or Matusz, Matusz or Crow? That seems to be the question. Fortunately for comparison sake, the only similarity they really share is they are both studs.

I am not going to get into college numbers when comparing them, because most college numbers are useless. The fact that Matusz struck out 16 against San Fransisco really does no good in his future projection. Something I will bring up is the K/BB ratio because I feel it is important no matter what division or league a pitcher is in that they throw strikes and have dominating stuff; Matusz with a 71:15 ratio and Crow with a 67:11. But, Crow plays against better competition blah blah blah that it why I do not want to get into comparing college stats. They are both dominating the college ranks, enough said.
