(Tempe, AZ) – Visiting Wofford College, the 2007 Southern Conference Champions, quickly discovered why Arizona State University is the consensus number one ranked team in the nation as the Sun Devils quickly built a 6 to 0 lead by the end of the second inning.
Terriers starter John Cornley began the game by throwing eight straight balls and therefore walked Devils leadoff hitter Jason Kipnis and two hole batter Ike Davis. However Cornley managed to find the zone against Brett Wallace and got him to strike out before clean up hitter Kiel Roling doubled down the left field line, scoring Kipnis. A Ryan Sontag ground out to Wofford first baseman Mo Seay that brought home Davis would complete the scoring in the first.
In the second inning after the first three Devils reached safely, a Kipnis triple cleared the bases and a Davis sacrifice fly would bring home Kipnis.
ASU would score three more runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a Wallace double to right center field.
The old gold and black staged a two out rally in the top of the seventh as designated hitter Emre Caglayan walked, Jake Williams singled, Sterling Dye was hit by a pitch and then Michael Gilmartin would bring all three home with his second consecutive double. But that would conclude the scoring for Wofford, as Davis would move from first base to the mound and finish the game off for the Devils. Without the benefit of time in the bullpen to warm up, the six foot four inch junior would strike out three of the five batters he faced.
