Well May must be just right around the corner as the DIV II and DIV III schools are gearing up for conference tournament time. If you are like us here at The College Baseball Blog, then this is a very exciting time of the year. American Southwest Conference Tournament

Mount Olive remained at No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 30 for the fourth consecutive week and ninth time in the last 10 weeks. The Trojans received all of the first-place votes in this week’s poll. The Ping Baseball Top 30 and NCBWA Top 25 have not yet been announced. Full Story | Collegiate Baseball Top 30

FRISCO, Texas – The Southland Conference Baseball players of the week were named today by the conference office as Stephen F. Austin outfielder Noel Trevino and UTSA pitcher Ryan Proudfoot are awarded weekly honors. Trevino claims his second award on the year joining Mike Jaworski, Northwestern State and Trent Lockwood, UTSA as the only players in the SLC to receive two player of the week awards. Proudfoot is the third UTSA pitcher to receive the weekly award marking the fifth consecutive for UTSA.

IRVING, Texas — Luke Anders (Texas A&M) and Brad Hutt (Kansas State) have been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games of April 21-27 in voting by a media panel. Anders receives the first weekly accolade of his career while Hutt is honored for the third time.

DALLAS - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association continues its tradition of NCAA Division I polls for the 11th year with its 2008 weekly surveys. Polls will be circulated from Feb. 25-June 30 following the NCAA World Series in Omaha, Neb.

The poll voters come from 30 college baseball writers and related media persons from throughout the nation. This week’s poll has representation by 11 different conferences among the 297 baseball-playing schools in the 2008 NCAA Division I ranks, and 16 total leagues have had teams in the Top 30 in ’08. A pair of freshmen have been honored as the Conference USA Baseball Players of the Week. After a highly-productive week that included leading his team to a conference series victory on the road, Marshall freshman designated hitter Victor Gomez has been named Conference USA Hitter of the Week. The league’s Pitcher of the Week honor went to East Carolina freshman right-hander Sthil Sowers, who earned a complete-game victory over No. 27 UNC Wilmington. Read the rest of this entry »

Going into this weekend the marquee matchup in Conference USA was Houston at Southern Miss as both teams positioned themselves for seeding at the C-USA Tournament and NCAA berths. However, the home-standing Golden Eagles won all three matchups, including a pair of one-run games to move ahead of the Cougars in the league standings. Tulane won two games at Memphis, with the third game being rained out. UCF surprised Rice on Friday night and played them tough the next two days, but the Owls took back-to-back one-run victories. Junior/Catcher/Florida State

Much like Gordon Beckham, a strong Junior year has caused Posey’s stock to sky rocket.

Career/ Background

Posey has been on the radar for a while, being ranked behind Justin Smoak and Reese Havens on Baseball America’s fab 50 Freshman list at #7.

His story is quite interesting, being drafted by the Angels in the 50th round as a SS, and signed by Florida State as a SS. However, he moved behind the plate after his Freshman season, not become of a lack of ability at SS, but because of the need of the team. USC snaps a six game loosing streak. Stanford’s loss drops them into a tie with ASU for first place in the Pac-10. Derek Perren went 2 for 3 for USC with a double, a home runs and 5 RBI’s. Jason Castro had another good day for Stanford, going 2 for 5 with a home run and 3 RBI’s.

ASU scored 10 runs in the second inning on only 3 hits. ASU’s win and Stanford’s loss puts both teams in a tie for first pace in the Pac-10 standings. The game was concluded after seven innings due to a combination of the 10 run mercy rule and Sunday travel requirements. Ryan Sontag was perfect at the plate for ASU going 3 for 3 including a triple. Petey Paramore’s only hit for ASU was a two run home run into a very strong wind blowing in. Cal starter Daniel Wolford only faced two batters and left the game after developing blisters.
