AUSTIN, Texas - St. Edward’s split a doubleheader against Incarnate Word Friday afternoon in San Antonio, Texas. The Hilltoppers took the first game, 10-3, and dropped game two, 9-8.

In game one, St. Edward’s (38-16, 36-11 HC) jumped all over Incarnate Word (39-15, 35-12 HC). The Hilltoppers rode a 15-hit attack to a, 10-3, victory. Josh Dale (8-1) picked up the victory. Dale, along with Chris Sharp, and David Wagner, held the Cardinals high powered offense to only five hits.

In game two, St. Edward’s jumped out to another early lead. The Hilltoppers scored five runs in the first inning, two in the third, and one in the fifth. The Cardinals staged a furious rally though, scoring nine runs in the final four innings to grab the, 9-8, victory.

After the game Coach Rob Penders commented on the impressive performances both teams displayed. “This was a battle of the top two teams in the conference, and as usual with doubleheaders between two great teams, there was a split. It just so happened that Incarnate Word won their game in dramatic fashion.”

St. Edward’s will conclude this weekend series with Incarnate Word Saturday afternoon. The two teams will play another doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m. The Hilltoppers need to win just one of these games to clinch their second consecutive Heartland Conference title.
