Auburn Fall World Series Game 1 Recap

AUBURN, Ala. – The Orange Team was able to ride the arm of Jon Luke Jacobs to a Game 1 win in the Fall World Series on Friday night at Plainsman Park, winning 5-2. Jacobs allowed just one hit over four innings of scoreless baseball to give Volunteer Assistant Coach Jeff Duncan’s squad the early edge in the best-of-three series.

Jacobs’ counterpart Austin Hubbard was nearly as good but was touched for a run in four innings as the starter for Matt Heath’s Blue team.

Casey McElroy led the Orange team at the plate with a three-hit night, driving in two, while Justin Hargett contributed two RBI as well.

Jamie Drinkard provided the offensive push for the Blue team, stroking two hits.

Vanderbilt Fall World Series Game 2 Recap

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Gold Squad returned the favor Friday night at Hawkins Field.

One night after the Black squad rallied for a win the Gold team rallied from a 3- 0 deficit to beat the Black squad 4-3, evening the Black and Gold series at 1-1 with the finale to be played at 1 p.m. Sunday.

“It was pretty well pitched,” Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin said. “The first two starters pitched really well and kept the game very competitive. The Gold team had opportunities early and stranded people.”

Gold, however, scored in the seventh and eighth innings. Trailing 3-1, Gold knotted the score at 3 when sophomore outfielder Alex Hilliard, who went 3- for-4 with two RBIs, tied the game on a balk by freshman pitcher Navery Moore. Hilliard knocked in Gold’s second run with a double to right field that scored freshman third baseman Alex Harris, who started the frame with a double.
