NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans baseball team announced its 2009 schedule on Monday, and the slate includes 13 games against NCAA Regional competition.

Fifth-year head coach Tom Walter, whose program is coming off back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances, will play 33 home games – including home contests against LSU, Tulane and Kentucky.

“We got an at-large selection into the NCAA Regional last year, and that was because of the strength of our schedule,” Walter said. “This schedule is no different. We are going to see some of the best teams in the country, and a lot of them will be coming to Maestri Field.”

UNO will start the season on Feb. 20 at home against Towson. The Privateers will play six home games in February before hosting 12 contests in March. Highlighting the stretch includes a March 3 home game against 2008 College World Series participant LSU.

The Privateers will also host Southern Mississippi on March 10, and fellow SEC member Kentucky will visit Maestri Field on March 17.

UNO will play cross-town rival Tulane in a home-and-home on April 21 and 22, and the Green Wave will also play at UNO on May 6. The Privateers will wrap up the regular season with a three-game home series against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Road highlights include a two-game series at Ole Miss April 7 and 8 before an April 14 contest at LSU.

The Sun Belt Conference Tournament will take place May 20 through 24 in Troy, Ala.

“We will be young to start the season and I know people may be a little unfamiliar with some of the names on the roster,” Walter said. “But we have a lot of talent, and it is the type of team that will get better and better as the year goes on.”
