Stockton, Calif. – In the final game of the 2008 Orange and Black World Series, the Orange Tigers gave themselves a tally in the win column with an 8-4 victory over their Black Tiger counterparts on Nov. 21.
Senior Larry Holscher (McArthur, Calif.) gave Orange a quality five-inning start, when he surrendered eight hits, while fanning four batters and offering two walks.
Holscher was bolstered offensively by his Orange teammates, as a trio of new players backed his cause. Freshman Jake Sylvester (Livermore, Calif.), junior Scott Isbell (Carlsbad, Calif.) and freshman Brett Christopher (Livermore, Calif.) combined to go 5-for-11 at the plate, driving in four runs. Isbell led all players with three RBI on the day. Junior Matt Fuson (Lodi, Calif.) asserted his power with his bat, when he posted a 2-for-4 outing at the plate and chipped in two of his team’s RBI.
In the black jerseys, senior Joey Centanni (San Diego, Calif.) followed up his 3-for-4 night on Thursday, hitting .500 with one RBI on Friday. Senior Mike McKeever (San Diego, Calif.) tried to recreate his offensive barrage from earlier in the series, but only went 1-for-2 at the plate when he laced a double past the infield. It was freshman Josh Simms (La Mesa, Calif.) who had the best outing for the Black Tigers after going 2-for-3 on the night.
If the Black Tigers had any momentum entering the final inning, junior David Rowse (Pleasanton, Calif.) shut the door to give Orange the win when he retired the side to finish the game.
The end of the Orange and Black World Series marks the close of the 2008 fall season. Pacific next returns to competition on Feb. 20, 2009, when it heads to Waco, Texas, to take on Baylor and kick off the 2009 season.
