The West Texas A&M baseball team continued to impress on Wednesday afternoon, as they ran their overall record to 4-1 after splitting a doubleheader against College of the Southwest in front of 50 fans at Williams Field in Hobbs, New Mexico.

The Buffs start Lone Star Conference play this weekend as they host Central Oklahoma in a four game series. This marks WT’s first home series of the season, as well as the first collegiate games at Potter County Memorial Stadium since the 2007 season.

West Texas A&M and the Bronchos are set to hit the diamond at the Dilla Villa on Saturday afternoon as first pitch of a doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The two teams meet again on Sunday afternoon, as the series wraps up with doubleheader action starting at 12:00 p.m.

The Buffs used a three run effort in the fourth inning to cruise past the Mustangs in game one, 6-2. At the plate, Rob Mann (Junior, Duncanville, Texas) went 1-for-2 with 2 RBIs.

“I thought we played well in game one, we hit the ball like we did last weekend against Sul Ross” said Head coach Matt Vanderburg “Our pitching did a great job.”

On the mound, Brandon Hickey (Senior, Odessa, Texas) improved his season record to 2-0 as he gave up one run on three Mustang hits in four innings of work to pick up the win.

The Buffs offense sputtered in game two, as the Mustangs pitching kept the WT bats off balance, picking up the win, 1-0. At the plate, Tyler Reagan (Junior, Lubbock, Texas) went 1 for 2 at the plate.

“We didn’t do a very job of adjusting to the left hander that USW threw in game two” Vanderburg said “Our pitching did a good job of keeping us in the game, they scored the only run in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.”

On the mound, Orvil Aviles (Senior, Manati, P.R.) picked up the loss. Aviles gave up the games only run off of two hits in 0.1 innings of work.
