ATLANTA – Junior RHP Alex White of the 6th ranked North Carolina Tar Heels threw 120 pitches, giving up just 4 hits and 2 earned runs in 8 innings in a 4-2 victory at the 3rd ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
Georgia Tech sophomore RHP Deck McGuire threw 126 pitches himself, giving up just 1 run on 2 hits while striking out 11, but that just wasn’t enough in a no-decision against the Tar Heels.
UNC freshman 2B Levi Michael hit a 9th inning home run to put the game away. Georgia Tech senior C Jason Haniger’s 8th inning double was the only other extra base hit in a pitchers’ duel.
The two teams face again in game 2 of the 3-game weekend series as Georgia Tech’s Zach Von Tersch (5-1, 5.79 ERA) faces North Carolina’s Adam Warren (3-2, 2.78 ERA) at 3pm Eastern Time.
