GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida State’s Jason Stidham has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Boston College’s Pat Dean has been tabbed for Pitcher of the Week honors.
Stidham help lead Florida State to a sweep of Virginia Tech as the Seminoles claimed their third straight ACC Atlantic Division title and assured themselves of no lower than a second seed in the upcoming 2009 ACC Championship (May 20-24 at Durham, N.C.) Stidham recorded multiple hits and multiple runs in all three games against the Hokies while reaching base on 12 of his 15 plate appearances. The Palm Bay, Fla., native hit .700 while registering seven hits, including a double and three home runs. He slugged 1.700 while posting an on-base percentage of .800.
Stidham hit a home run in each game of the series and has homered in four consecutive games. Stidham did not strike out in any of his 15 plate appearances over the weekend, tallying four walks and a hit by pitch. Stidham has not struck out in nine straight games – a span of 41 plate appearances.
Stidham was also perfect from the field in 18 total chances during the Virginia Tech series and was part of history in Sunday’s series finale as he made the third put-out at second base on a third-inning triple play. It marked FSU’s first triple play since 1997.
Boston College’s Dean pitched seven innings of shutout baseball to lead the Eagles to a 13-3 win against No. 13 Miami in the series finale on Sunday. Dean allowed just four hits and one walk as the Eagles recorded their first-ever win vs. the Hurricanes.
Dean, a sophomore from Naugatuck, Conn., struck out seven on the day to improve his record to 5-3. He retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced and only two runners reached second base while he was on the mound.
