Texas 3 Army 1

AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 5 Texas Longhorns held the Army Black Knights to one run on four hits while cruising to a 3-1 victory at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Friday night.

Texas starter Cole Green (5-2) scattered four hits and three walks over 7.0 innings to allow just one run while striking out six. Austin Wood pitched 2.0 hitless innings to close out the game for his 15th save of the season. He moves into a third-place tie with Huston Street on UT’s single-season save list. The duo now trails only J. Brent Cox (2005) and Charlie Thames (2000) who both logged 19 saves.

Green was also forced into batting duties on the day when Brandon Belt was forced out of the game after being hit by pitch in the neck/back of the head in the first inning. The Longhorns lost the designated hitter option when Preston Clark had to move from the DH spot to take Belt’s spot at first base. Green had two plate appearances, going 1-for-1 with a sacrifice bunt.

Texas (42-13-1) drew first blood in the home half of the third inning. Travis Tucker drew a walk to start off the inning and moved to second on Green’s sacrifice bunt. The Longhorns would have had runners on the corners after a Michael Torres’ single to leftfield, but Tucker was waved home where he was gunned down by Army leftfielder Ben Koenigsfeld. Torres moved to second on the play at the plate and stole third base, setting up an RBI single to centerfield by Cameron Rupp.
