I recently came across this fantastic article from The Enterprise News which looks at Holy Cross LHP Matt Shapiro who was named the 2008 Patriot League Pitcher of the year. He had a very interesting 2008-2009 school year which featured him being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma after having a sore throat and doctors discovered a tumor in his chest. He would start treatments at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in November and they would last for six months through the college baseball season. This did not slow down Shapiro at all as he made 10 starts while having a 3-4 record with an ERA of 6.40. He ended up facing several challenges including being hospitalized on the team’s West Coast trip and getting his chemotherapy in his pitching arm which led to him struggling that week against Army. This article is a must read for anyone that is interested in a great sports story.
