Texas Longhorns recruit Colton Cain signs with Pirates

Baseball America writer Jim Callis reports that the Pittsburgh Pirates and Colton Cain have agreed on a 1.125 million dollar contract bypassing his collegiate eligibility. Cain was expected to become a key contributor to the Longhorns program as he features a mid-90’s fastball and also had potential into developing into a top level first baseman. Cain’s stock dropped as he told many MLB clubs that he was set on attending college but with this substantial offer for the eighth round pick he had to sign a professional deal.

For the Longhorns to lose a pitcher of that caliber and a potential 1st baseman that has to have an impact, especially this time of year, with fall semester just starting in a few weeks. Sounds like Pittsbugh was in a good position and make that deal breaking offer that changed Colton Cain zipcode for a while. Good luck Colton.
I have to say I am a little disapointed Colton didn’t sign with Texas. A chace to play at one of the top D1 schools in the nation would certainly get me pumped. I went to Waxahachie High School, graduated a year before Colton. I know he has the strength to do well in the major league as he would anywhere else. Hachie will miss you!
