CLEVELAND, Ohio – Drew Saylor, a member of the Lake Erie Crushers, has been named an assistant baseball coach at Cleveland State.
Head coach Kevin Kocks made the announcement on Thursday (Oct. 8).
"We are excited to add Drew to our staff," Kocks said. "He brings a wealth of baseball knowledge with him and was a highly accomplished player in high school and college. I look forward to working with him and we continue to build the program."
Saylor began his college career at Cincinnati where he was an everyday infielder for two years (2002-05). He transferred to Kent State where he went on to earn first team All-League honors in 2006 when he won the conference batting title. A first team All-American selection by the Louisville Slugger & Collegiate Baseball Magazine, he was also a semi-finalist for the Brookes Wallace Award.
Following his collegiate career, Saylor was a 13th round draft pick by the Florida Marlins, playing in the New York-Penn League in Jamestown, N.Y. in 2006. He joined the Houston Astros organization in 2007, batting .286 in the Appalachian League before hitting .276 in 2008 while playing for the Chillicothe Paints in the Frontier League.
This past summer, Saylor was a member of the Lake Erie Crushers, who were an expansion team in the Frontier League. He hit .302 with 70 runs, 26 doubles, 10 homers and 62 runs batted in as the Crushers everyday second baseman. His efforts helped the Crushers claim the Frontier League title.
Saylor was a two-time Medina County Player of the Year at Wadsworth H.S., earning all-league honors four times. The 2002 Ohio Division I Player of the Year, Saylor also earned second team All-American honors.
He graduated from Kent State with a Bachelor’s of Science in Educational Studies.
