The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
We continue the list today with number 81 in our countdown with sophomore LHP Ali Simpson. He is a 6-3 lefty out of Campbell River, British Columbia and attended Carihi Secondary High School. He had a solid high school career as he had 1.21 ERA in 79 innings pitched.
Simpson was 9-2 in 2009 with a 3.23 ERA, striking out 79 batters in 75.1 innings. Simpson allowed 68 hits and only 14 extra base hits all season long and had an ERA of under 2.00 for most of the season. He ended the season with seven straight wins and a no-decision at the NCAA Regional. He had an impressive start on May 10th when he pitched 8.1 innings against the Miami Hurricanes. He only gave up four hits with three walks as he led the Wildcats to the massive upset 5-2 over the Hurricanes. Simpson was named the MEAC Rookie of the Year and First-Team All-Conference as he went 5-0 with a 1.09 ERA in conference games. He was also named a Louisville Slugger/Baseball America Freshman All-American.
He spent the summer of 2009 pitching for Harrisonburg Turks where he pitched in seven games (all starts) and went 4-1 with a 2.89 ERA. He finished the season with 43 strikeouts in 37.1 innings but struggled with his control as he walked 24 batters. He also held opponents to a .206 average against him.
