DukeBaseballReading DURHAM, N.C. – Members of the Duke baseball team wrapped up their participation in Duke University and Verizon’s "Read With The Blue Devils" program, which sends Duke student-athletes to local elementary schools to read to third-grade students.

The Read With The Blue Devils program is intended to aid area teachers by providing reading incentives for third graders in Durham. By reading for 15 minutes for 12 nights, a youngster is able to reach various levels and earn Blue Devil gifts along the way.  Among the prizes given out are autographed team photos, posters, t-shirts and chances to meet Duke student-athletes at various functions.

This is the 18th year that the Blue Devils have done the Verizon Read with the Blue Devils program. The baseball team’s visits included trips to Glenn Elementary, Merrick-Moore Elementary, Little River Elementary and Club Boulevard Humanities Magnet School.

Duke baseball has been heavily involved in the program over the past several years as part of a strong community service effort. In addition to the Read With The Blue Devils, the baseball team takes part in numerous community service outings, which this year included the Miracle League of the Triangle, volunteering at the Durham Soup Kitchen and Habitat for Humanity.
