CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia baseball team gave back to the community on Sunday morning (Nov. 22) by helping to revitalize a local youth baseball field in honor of Carson Raymond, a local 9-year-old who passed away in October from severe flu-like symptoms. UVa helped in the project at Woodbrook Elementary School, where Carson was a third-grade student.
"Our baseball team is humbled to be a part of the construction of the new baseball field in honor of Carson," Virginia baseball coach Brian O’Connor said. "The field will provide other young children the opportunity to enjoy the sport he loved. It means a lot to our players to be involved in helping Carson’s memory live on."
Virginia student-athletes, coaches and staff members helped to demolish the existing Woodbrook Elementary field and laid the groundwork for a new and improved Little League field, which will feature dugouts and an infield composed of the same dirt used by the Washington Nationals. The hope is for work on the field to be completed by the end of January.
The UVa contingent removed the existing backstop, moved three truckloads of dirt to replace the existing surface, extended the infield by ripping out strips of sod and then leveled the playing surface; they also helped with a few other various projects around the site.
