FROM CBB NEWS SOURCE

MaxWilletNewMexico ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.–Lobo baseball centerfielder Max Willet turned what was a class group project into an event that helped raise over $2,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Willet, a business major, is currently enrolled in the Anderson School of Management at New Mexico. The Highlands Ranch, Colo., native and a group of fellow students put on an event on Nov. 19 called, "Bingo for Breast Cancer" which included 10 rounds of bingo, a silent auction and a raffle that lasted the entire evening.

"It felt good to do this," said Willet. "It felt like we were actually accomplishing something, not just taking tests and reading books. We actually got to extend our arm to the community. Overall as a class we raised about $10,000. I was excited that we were able to accomplish this. It felt good to give back."

Each group in the class was allotted a $500 budget for all of their expenses and had to pick a non-profit organization to help raise money for. The pick for Willet and company was an easy one because of their close ties to the situation.

"The Susan G. Komen Foundation seemed to fit our group," he said. "It fit me personally because my grandmother is a breast cancer survivor. Another group member, former softball player Samantha Hughes’ mom is a breast cancer survivor."

Willet is a two time Academic all-MWC award winner and is slated to graduate in May of 2010.

When not in the classroom, Willet is an all-MWC centerfielder and senior on the Lobo baseball team. The Lobos will start the 2010 season on the road as they take on Texas in Austin on Feb. 19. For more information visit www.GoLobos.com.
