Top 100 Countdown: Number 43 Cody Wheeler (Coastal Carolina)

CodyWheelerCCU The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 43 in our countdown with Coastal Carolina junior LHP Cody Wheeler. He is from Spotsylvania, Va.where he attended Spotsylvania High School. He has a strong senior season as he went 10-2 with a 1.59 earned-run average and hit .529 with 24 RBI. He set a school record with 112 strikeouts on the mound while opponents hit just .123 off of him.

 

Wheeler stepped right into the Coastal Carolina program as he went 6-0 with a 5.62 ERA in 21 appearances including 11 starts. He finished the season with 65 strikeouts in 65.2 innings but walked 46 batters. He continued his strong college career as a sophomore as he went 10-1 with a 3.83 ERA in 15 starts including one complete game. He finished the season with 98 strikeouts in 91.2 innings of work. He also struggled with his control as he walked 34 batters. He did end up holding batters to a .222 average against him. He spent the summer of 2009 with the USA Collegiate National Team where he made five appearances (four starts) with a 3-0 record with a 2.42 ERA. He continued with his control problems as he walked 13 batters in 22.1 innings of work but struck out 31.
