The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
We continue the list today with number 35 in our countdown with Texas RHP Chance Ruffin. He is from Austin Texas where he attended Lake Travis High School. During his senior season, he went 11-2 with a 1.17 ERA while striking out 132 batters. He picked up several awards including team MVP, All-District 27-4A and All-CenTex honors. As a junior, he went 10-4 record with a 1.26 ERA and 121 strikeouts to earn second-team All-District 27-4A.
Ruffin’s freshman season in 2008 saw him appear in 23 games including 10 starts while going 8-3 with three saves, an ERA of 1.96, .191 opponents batting average, one complete game and 82 strikeouts in 78.0 innings. In Big 12 play, he made nine appearances including five starts accumulating a .186 opponents batting average, one complete game and 41 strikeouts in 43.2 innings. He picked up several honors including Third-team All-American by Baseball America, First-team Freshman All-American by Baseball America, First-team Freshman All-America by NCBWA, Freshman All-America by Louisville Slugger’s/Collegiate Baseball, Big 12 Freshman of the Year, NCAA Houston Regional All-Tournament Team, and Second Team All-Big 12. He had a tryout with the U.S. National Team in the summer of 2008, posting a 1-0 mark with a 1.80 ERA. He allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out 11 in 5.0 innings of work.
Ruffin continued with his strong college career as a sophomore where he made 25 appearances with 18 starts. He finished the season with a 10-2 record with 2 saves including 115 strikeouts as he pitched in a team-high 124.2 innings. He held opponents to a .230 average while hitting 14 batters and walking 25. He was named First Team All-Big 12 after the season was over.
