Share The Nashville City Paper has an excellent article on Vanderbilt baseball donor Bill Kaye. He donated $500,000 which is going to stadium renovations at Hawkins Field and for the team to go on an eight-day, four-game exhibition tour through Japan. This is an important trip for the Commodores as it gives them an extra 10 days of practice for the tour and four games against international competition.

Share The Cape Cod Baseball League had its induction ceremony to their Hall of Fame over the weekend. They inducted ten different people including Harold “Pie” Traynor, Lou Lamoriello, Joe Magrane, Art Quirk, Bill Schroeder, Greg Vaughn, Mark Angelo, John Awdycki, Zane Carlson, and former Chatham manager Joe “Skip” Lewis.

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Jeff Stevens has been named the volunteer baseball coach at East Carolina University according to an announcement from head coach Billy Godwin Monday.
Prior to his appointment at ECU, Stevens spent part of the 2008 season as the bench coach for the Danville Braves, where he maintained opponent scouting reports, assisted with instruction of the catchers and daily practice routines and coordinated team travel arrangements to and from the field.

BATON ROUGE — Game 1 of the LSU Baseball Purple-Gold World Series begins at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Alex Box Stadium. The three-game intrasquad series signals the conclusion of LSU’s five-week fall practice session.
Game 2 is set for 3 p.m. Wednesday and Game 3 starts at 3 p.m. Thursday. All games will be seven innings, and they are open to the public with free admission.

Share Chris Sale of Florida Gulf Coast continues to impress MLB scouts as he recently took part in FGCU Scout Day. Sale is a huge 6-6 185 pound lefty as he tossed 20 pitches topping out at 94 MPH while his changeup was 84 MPH while he has a deadly slider at 82 MPH. He was named the top prospect in the Cape Cod Baseball League after going 4-2 with a 1.47 ERA with 57 strikeouts while giving up only nine walks. The CCBL named him the Pitcher of the Year for his accomplishments on the diamond.

Share The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
We continue the list today with number 65 in our countdown with Cal Poly sophomore second baseman Matt Jensen. He is from Clovis California where he attended Clovis East High School. He picked up four letters playing under head coach Jeff Prieto where he hit .458 with six doubles, five triples, eight home runs, 21 RBIs and 36 runs scored. Jensen was also solid on the mound as he went 5-3 with a 2.29 ERA while striking out 55 batters in 52 innings as he threw two complete games and a shutout. He picked up several honors including All-Tri-River Athletic Conference honors all four years and also earned All-Valley and All-Regional honors. He was also named a third-team All-American as a senior. The Seattle Mariners selected him in the 11th round in the 2008 MLB draft but Jensen decided to head to Cal Poly to play under Larry Lee.

LAFAYETTE – University of Louisiana student-athletes from all sports will be participating in a bus tour to promote literacy and give back to their former elementary schools on November 16 and 17, 2009. While riding on the Ragin’ Cajuns-wrapped Calco bus, student-athletes will be visiting elementary schools in the Acadiana area and reading Jady Regard’s book Born to Be a Ragin’ Cajun to the elementary school students.
