LINCOLN, Neb. — Kelly Minissale had a no-hit effort thru six innings and lasted 8.1 innings as Oral Roberts University defeated Nebraska, 8-0, to stay alive in the NCAA Lincoln Regional and eliminate the Cornhuskers on Sunday afternoon at Hawks Field.

ORU improves to 48-13 and will now play UC-Irvine on Sunday night at 6:05 p.m. The Golden Eagles need to beat the Anteaters twice before advancing to the next round. No. 1 seed Nebraska saw their season come to an end with a 41-16-1 record.

Minissale finished with 8.1 innings of work, allowing just two hits while striking out two to improve to 3-3 on the year.

FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 18 TCU Horned Frogs never say die approach in games reared its head as they battled back from an 8-2 deficit with six runs in the last two innings to tie the game. The comeback was not to be, though, as No. 5 Oklahoma State’s Jordy Mercer capped a career-day with his third home run of the game in the bottom of the ninth to give the Cowboys a 9-8 victory in the Stillwater Regional. The Stillwater Regional includes Oklahoma State, Wichita State, Texas Christian and Western Kentucky.

Oklahoma State finished second in the Big 12 Conference regular-season standings and will bring a 42-16 overall record into the tournament. Joining the Cowboys in Stillwater are second-seeded Wichita State, which owns a 44-15 record, along with third-seeded Texas Christian (43-17) and fourth-seeded Western Kentucky (32-25).

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The No. 24 Texas Longhorns logged 19 hits to post a 15-7 win over the Kansas State Wildcats in the title game of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.

It was the third league tournament crown for Texas who also won the prize in 2002 and 2003.

Brandon Belt was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship Most Outstanding Player. He went .588 (10-of-17) with five runs, two doubles, one home run and 10 RBI in four games.

Texas 11, Oklahoma 10

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Sophomore David Hernandez chipped an 0-2 offering for an RBI single to cap a three-run rally and lead the Texas Longhorns to a come-from-behind 11-10 win over the Oklahoma Sooners in Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship baseball action at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark Saturday morning

With Texas trailing 10-8 in the bottom of the ninth, Jordan Danks and Kyle Russell drew walks from Jake McCarter to leadoff the frame. Chase Anderson came in to pitch for the Sooners and induced a pop up on a bunt attempt by Russell Moldenhauer for the first out. Brandon Belt reignited the rally with a single to rightfield, plating Danks and trimming the lead to 10-9. Preston Clark struck out looking to bring Hernandez to the plate with two outs. Hernandez swung at strike two in the dirt, but a wild pitch allowed Russell to score from third and put Belt in scoring position. The College Baseball Blog recently had a chance to check out the Oklahoma Sooners and we have put our thoughts about the Draft possibilities of the top players on the squad.
SO Jamie Johnson 5′8, 185 OF
Johnson was drafted in the 50th round in 06 by Colorado. He is a small guy with a great bat. This year he is hitting .358 with 5 HR, 22 RBI, 8 Doubles, 25 Walks and 26 strikeouts. He also has a ton of speed and has stolen 18 bases. It appears he may have a little pop in his bat too. I will be anxious to see how his bat control is and to see his speed on the bases. I could see Johnson getting drafted (after next year) in the top 5 rounds if he can keep hitting for average, keep stealing a ton of bases and continue to progress with his power. We recently sent a staff member out to check out the Missouri State Bears. We have our observations about some of their top players.

RF Nolan Keane SR, 5′9, 170 - Keane is a power hitting lefty that hit .314 with 9HR and 32RBI last season. This year he is at .341 with 4HR 10 Doubles and 36RBI while striking out 20 times and walking 36 times. He has a shot to be drafted in the middle rounds with his nice bat and on base abilities. I will be watching him to see if he has any pop or just a hit-for-average type player. I will also be curious to see his arm. Read the rest of this entry »

The CBB recently had an opportunity to take in the Missouri-Kansas series over this past weekend. We focused on the strong Missouri team which includes one of the top pitchers in the country for 2008 in Aaron Crow and one of the top 2009 pitching prospects in Kyle Gibson. We also checked in on some of the other top players on the squad who might make an impact in the coming future.

Aaron Crow JR 6′3, 195 RHP
Crow is one of the top players in the country and I believe him to be the best pitcher in the country (Brian Matusz of San Diego gets a close 2nd). Crow has 2 very strong pitches he relies on. His fastball and his slider. His fastball is in the lower to mid 90’s with good late movement. He has great command of it and throws it on both sides of the plate and will use it up in the zone. His control is extremely good. Having control and command of a mid 90’s moving fastball is a sick thing to have as a pitcher. He couldn’t do it all with just a fastball however. The following is a scouting report on the Texas Tech Red Raiders from Aman Reaka who watched them play against Kansas on April 11th-13th. We will continue to bring you scouting looks at certain teams throughout the season.

JR Roger Kieschnick 6′3, 215, RF
Kieschnick is a stud hitter with plus power who should be a first round pick in June. He is a true and legitimate power hitting prospect. He played for Team USA and even tied Pedro Alvarez for the team lead in HR’s. He is hitting .307 with 11 HR, 36 RBI, 10 Doubles, 21 K’s and 26 walks. No. 8 Wichita State Knocks Off Kansas, 7-3

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Senior right fielder Ryne Price hit his seventh home run of the season, while sophomore Paul Smyth struck out five in three innings of work, but it was not enough. Conor Gillaspe’s RBI ground out in the top of the fifth broke a three-all tie and lifted No. 8 Wichita State to a 7-3 triumph over Kansas Tuesday evening at Hoglund Ballpark.

The Shockers improve to 21-3 on the season, while KU falls to 18-13

The Shockers have a few top tier draft picks on this team. Several of which id expect to make it to the show (MLB). It isn’t a super deep team when it comes to pro prospects, but what the Shockers do so well is MAKE professional players out of hard working kids. So I would expect for many more to come out of the woodwork as the year progresses and to be there as a prospect next season. Let me go over who I am going to be keeping my eyes on Tuesday. Let me begin by saying that the Aggies have a great offense (.304 team average) with a lot of consistent power through their entire lineup (72 extra base hits and 22 HR thus far). They score a lot of runs (about 7 per game) and steal a lot of bases (38). They really put the pressure on the pitching staff and on the defense. Along with that great offense comes even better pitching (2.97 ERA with almost 9 K’s per game). They are a staff of strikeout pitchers and the bullpen follows suit (2.23 ERA).
