SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind another outstanding pitching performance from junior All-American Brian Matusz, the ninth-ranked University of San Diego baseball team cruised their way to a 11-4 West Coast Conference win over visiting Loyola Marymount Friday afternoon at USD’s Cunningham Stadium.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 33-11 overall, move to 11-2 in the WCC and run the nation’s longest winning streak to 14 games. With the loss, the Lions fall to 20-21 overall and 5-8 in the WCC.

Wortham Twirls Five-Hit Shutout
USAFA, Colo. (April 25, 2008)–Jake Wortham twirled a five-hit shutout Friday, going the distance in BYU’s 22-0 victory with howling winds at the Air Force Academy.

Wortham evened his record at 3-3, retiring 14 straight before surrendering a double in the ninth inning as the Cougars snapped a five-game losing streak. The junior southpaw from Allen, Texas also recorded nine strikeouts, no walks and retired the side in order in the third, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

Sitting in the stands watching both games unfold, I had to wonder…was the six plus hour travel time by bus,  playing out-of-state against a top 20 team in Cal State Fullerton, that has gotten the best of ASU over the past few seasons or just the fact that Arizona State needed to change their downward ways. Any which way you look at it, this midweek two game series was inspiring!

You need to look no further than 19 total runs for ASU and 18 for CSF in two games.

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team rallied to a 5-4 win over the University of San Francisco on Wednesday night at Pete Beiden Field.

The win ups the Bulldogs record to 25-17 while USF dropped to 23-18. Fresno State scored its five runs on six hits as Ryan Overland, Gavin Hedstrom, Alan Ahmady, Steve Detwiler, Tommy Mendonca and Jake Johnson all had hits for the Dogs.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Justin Bloxom pounded a full-count, two-out pitch over the left centerfield wall for a two-run walk-off home run as Kansas State defeated 11th-ranked UC Irvine, 9-7, Wednesday night at Tointon Family Stadium. LAS CRUCES, NM- - For the second straight weekend the Fresno State baseball team swept a four-game series from a conference opponent. Last weekend the Bulldogs took four games from Louisiana Tech and this weekend the Dogs took four at New Mexico State after beating the Aggies 24-6 in seven innings on Sunday afternoon at Presley Askew Field.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 12th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team completed a three-game sweep over Saint Mary’s College with a 5-1 win Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at USD’s Cunningham Stadium.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 31-11 overall, move to 10-2 in the WCC, run their winning streak to 12 games and sweep their third consecutive WCC team. With the loss, the Gaels fall to 20-16-1 overall and 4-8 in the WCC.

The Toreros got on the scoreboard first as they scored one run on one hit in the second inning. With two outs, both Kevin Hansen and Tony Strazzara got things started with back-to-back walks. Jose Valerio then drove in Hansen with a RBI single up the middle to give USD a 1-0 lead.

IRVINE, Calif. — The fifth-ranked Anteaters were upset by UC Riverside, losing 7-5 in the series finale Sunday at Anteater Ballpark. The loss dropped UCI to 6-6 in the Big West (24-9 overall) while the Highlanders improved to 11-23 (5-4 Big West) overall. The 12th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team ran their winning streak to a season-high 11 games with a 6-0 win over Saint Mary’s College behind a strong pitching performance from junior All-American pitcher Josh Romanski and another solid offensive output Saturday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium.

With the win, the Toreros improve their overall record to 30-11, move to 9-2 in the WCC, have now strung together 11 straight wins and they claim the series over SMC. With the loss, the Gaels fall to 20-15-1 overall and 4-7 in the WCC.

Romanski (7-0) looked impressive on the mound for the Toreros as he allowed no runs on five hits, while striking out five in 7.0 innings of work. Brandon Berl (3-4) was saddled with the loss for the Gaels as he allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits in 3.1 innings of work.

LONG BEACH, Calif. — UCI starter Daniel Bibona held Long Beach State to one run to lead the No. 7 Anteaters to a 4-1 win over No. 16 Long Beach State Sunday at Blair Field. UCI improved to 23-6 overall and 5-4 in the Big West while Long Beach State dropped to 19-14 overall (2-4 Big West).

Bibona retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced. The southpaw worked himself out of a jam in the fourth, retiring three straight after giving up a single and a base on balls to start the frame. Outfielder Dillon Bell’s diving catch on Rylan Sandoval’s sinking line drive ended the Dirtbag threat.
