Stutes made the potent ASU offense look silly, striking out nine Devils on the evening. But in the third inning Stutes had a slight hiccup as he hit Raoul Torrez in the back with a 2-2 pitch. A pair of walks followed, while a Jason Kipnis sacrifice fly to left field tied the game at one.

On Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field, Washington State and Arizona State competed in the rubber game of their three game Pac-10 series. Trading the lead back and forth all afternoon, ASU’s improbable eight run ninth proved too much to overcome, giving the Sun Devils the series with the 16 to 13 win. 3,313 fans packed Bailey-Brayton Field to watch the two teams compete. It is “Mom’s Weekend” on the Washington State campus and the clear skies, light winds and comfortable temperature made it a perfect day for baseball. Saturday was not only the biggest crowd of the season so far for the Cougars, but also the largest crowd to witness a WSU home baseball game since 1999.
