Four schools list two players apiece among the honorees

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Lubbock Christian (TX) University, 2009 national champions, has landed two players on the 2010 NAIA Baseball Preseason All-America Team, the NAIA announced Friday. Three other schools list two players apiece among the honorees, including Lewis-Clark State (ID), LSU-Shreveport and Saint Xavier (IL).

All 2010 Preseason All-Americans garnered postseason 2009 All-America honors. Ross Blondin of Lubbock Christian, Andrew Brouillette of LSU-Shreveport, Brice Cutspec of Azusa Pacific (CA), Tim Dunn of Trevecca Nazarene (TN), Jayson Koehn of Saint Xavier, Jono Waugh of Southern Polytechnic State (GA) and Justin Zinkovich of Embry-Riddle (FL) were all mentioned on the 2009 All-America First Team. Three other standouts were named to the All-America Second Team while seven players were All-America Honorable Mention picks.

The Okotoks Dawgs and the Melville Millionaires have been declared co-champions of the Western Major Baseball League.

The Millionaires won the first game of what was originally scheduled to be a best-of-five series 5-3. Coty Saranthus (Southwest Mississippi CC) got the win, and Mark Hardy (British Columbia) got the loss. The game was tied 3-3 going into the ninth inning, and Kyle Barclay (Erie CC) pinch-hit an RBI single, followed by another RBI single by James Green (Houston-Victoria). The Okotoks Dawgs will play the Melville Millionaires in a bid to win their third straight Western Major Baseball League championship. The first two games of the best-of-five final series will be in Okotoks, AB Wednesday, August 12, and Thursday, August 13. The third and fourth (if necessary) games will be played in Melville, SK August 14 and 15, and the fifth (if necessary) game will be played in Okotoks.

The defending champion Corvallis Knights won their third straight West Division pennant, behind the hitting of Richie Jimenez (Riverside CC) and the pitching of Matt Andriese (UC Riverside). They will play the Bend Elks in the first playoff round. The first game of the best-of-three series will be in Bend, OR on August 11. The Okotoks Dawgs swept their series against the Moose Jaw Miller Express, 2-1, 10-5, and 5-4. Jeff Duda (Campbellsville) pitched a four-hit complete game in the first game, struck out 11. The Dawgs trailed 1-0 going into the seventh inning, but they tied it in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Mac Sullivan (USC), and won it on the eighth on an RBI double by Jeremy Shelby (Grambling State). In the third game, Manny Kumar (Grambling State) scored the winning run on a passed ball. The Dawgs will play the Medicine Hat Mavericks in the semifinal playoff round; the series starts Thursday, August 6 at Okotoks.

The regular season for the WMBL is over, and the playoffs start on Friday, July 31. The Okotoks Dawgs won the West Division pennant with a 32-13 record, and they will host the Moose Jaw Miller Express in the first playoff round. The Swift Current Indians won the Central Division pennant with a 27-13 record, and they will host Yorkton Cardinals in the first round. The Melville Millionaires won the East Division with a 26-14 record, and will host the Regina Red Sox. The other first-round playoff matchup is Medicine Hat Mavericks at Lethbridge Bulls. Bend Elks 3, Bellingham Bells 2 (13 innings)

Another West Coast League game, and extra innings. CF Lucas Hileman (Baylor) came home on a wild pitch by Mitch Ludtke (Skagit Valley CC) to provide the winning run in the top of the 13th.

Both teams got excellent efforts from their starters, although they were long gone before it was over. Bend’s Peter Lavin (San Francisco) allowed eight hits over eight innings, and Bellingham’s Tyrell Poggemeyer (Skagit Valley CC, transferring to Lewis-Clark State) allowed five hits over seven innings. After giving up runs in the first two innings on RBI single by RF Cal Towey (Baylor)  and 2B Colin Stock (Saint Mary’s) coming in on a double steal, Poggemeyer retired 17 of the next 18 batters he faced.

The Okotoks Dawgs won five of six over the past week, running their record to 27-11. They now lead the West Division by 6.5 games. They also continue to draw good crowds; 2,063 for a 5-3 win over the Medicine Hat Mavericks (Jake Bottari [College of Idaho] got the win) and 2,352 for an 11-10 win over the Lethbridge Bulls. Jeff Duda (Campbellsville) got a 7-0 shutout at the Edmonton Prospects, and leads the team in W-L (6-1), ERA (2.29). He leads the league in strikeouts (80), and has issued only nine walks in 70 2/3 innings pitched. Duda pitched the first eight innings of a 12-inning 3-2 win at Medicine Hat; Mac Sullivan (USC) hit a home run to win it, and Lee Ingram (Thompson Rivers) got the win. Manny Kumar (Grambling State) singled in the winning run in a 12-inning 3-2 win at Lethbridge. Anthony Cros (Northwest Oklahoma State) continues to lead the Dawgs in hitting, with an average of .398. Jordan Rawlyk (transferring from Monterey Peninsula JC to Sonoma State), Brandon Kaye (transferring from Douglas College to British Columbia) and Matt Bannister (British Columbia) combined for a no-hitter in a mercy-rule-shortened 14-0 win over The Bahamas.

Rawlyk went five innings, struck out seven, walked three. Kaye, who was drafted in the 45th round by the Blue Jays, pitched the sixth inning, and threw only five pitches. Bannister pitched the seventh inning.

The Kitsap Blue Jackets play their home games at the Kitsap Fairgrounds and Events Center near Bremerton, WA, which is a one-hour ferry ride west of Seattle.

A wild West Coast League evening started with the completion of a game that was suspended after 16 innings on June 17 with the score 1-1, because the lights went out at 11 PM. It took another four innings to settle it. Andy Bethel (Washington) hit a ball into shallow center field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the twentieth inning. The outfielder dropped it to allow the winning run to score. Cody Hevner (hasn’t picked a college yet) got the win, and Steve Kalush (Santa Clara) got the loss. Box score and play-by-play The Knights defeated the Blue Jackets 1-0 the previous night (Liam Baron [Linn-Benton CC] pitched a three-hit shutout), and Blue Jackets owner Rick Smith, a Bremerton attorney, was quick to point out that his team had held the Knights, ranked #3 nationally by Perfect Game Crosschecker, to a total of two runs over 29 innings.
