Game 1: #3 Southern Miss 17, #2 Elon 15

Senior second baseman Bennett Davis’ three home runs were not enough for Elon in a 17-15 loss to the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss.

The two teams combined for 71 total bases, the 4th highest ever total in an NCAA regional game.  The slugfest also featured 11 home runs and 34 hits.

Bo Davis, senior right fielder for Southern Miss, hit his second home run of the game in the 9th inning to put the Golden Eagles ahead for good.  Elon scored 2 in the bottom of the 9th, but those runs were not enough.  Southern Miss advances in the winners’ bracket of the Atlanta regional. Georgia Tech’s Russ Chandler Stadium plays host to the Atlanta regional, its 9th NCAA regional since 1987.

The #1 seed Georgia Tech faces Colonial Athletic Association champion and cross-town rival Georgia State at 7pm Friday. The two teams have met twice this season with the road team winning each game: Georgia State defeating Georgia Tech 10-1 at Russ Chandler Stadium and Georgia Tech winning 18-2 at Panthersville.

The #2 seed Elon was the Southern Conference regular season champion and will face #3 seed Southern Miss at 3pm Friday. The only prior meetings between the two schools came in 1978 in a 4-game series which Elon won 3-1.

ATLANTA — Georgia Tech junior first baseman Tony Plagman went 5-for-5 with 4 runs and 3 RBIs to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 12-3 victory over the Florida State Seminoles in game 1 of a crucial ACC series.

Florida State started off the game scoring 3 in the top of the first, with 5 hits including a 2-run homer from junior shortstop Stephen Cardullo.  But those were the only runs Florida State were going to get on the night. Read the rest of this entry »

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech senior catcher Jason Haniger hit an 11th inning walk-off grand slam to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 10-6 victory over the 6th ranked Tar Heels of North Carolina.

With one out in the 11th, UNC sophomore Colin Bates allowed singles to Chris House and Jeff Rowland before sophomore Nate Striz came in to relieve him.  Derek Dietrich followed up with a single to load the bases before Haniger’s walk-off grand slam.

Georgia Tech senior right fielder Luke Murton contributed two home runs and 3 RBIs; center fielder Rowland and shortstop Dietrich also added 3 hits each. Read the rest of this entry »

ATLANTA – Junior RHP Alex White of the 6th ranked North Carolina Tar Heels threw 120 pitches, giving up just 4 hits and 2 earned runs in 8 innings in a 4-2 victory at the 3rd ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Georgia Tech sophomore RHP Deck McGuire threw 126 pitches himself, giving up just 1 run on 2 hits while striking out 11, but that just wasn’t enough in a no-decision against the Tar Heels. Read the rest of this entry »

CARY, NC — The #2 national seed North Carolina Tar Heels (49-12, 22-7 ACC) host the Big South champion Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (50-12, 17-3 Big South) at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary. Both teams went 3-0 in their regionals last weekend with UNC defeating Mount St. Mary’s and UNC-Wilmington and Coastal Carolina defeating Columbia, Alabama and East Carolina. ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia defeated Lipscomb 14-3 and Georgia Tech 8-0 to force a game 7 in the Athens regional Monday.

In the first game against Lipscomb, right fielder Matt Olson went 5-for-6 and shortstop Gordon Beckham went 4-for-6, and first baseman Rich Poythress added 5 RBIs. Nathan Moreau earned the victory for the Bulldogs, improving to 4-2 on the season. The Lipscomb Bisons completed their season with a 33-30 record. Read the rest of this entry »

GEORGIA TECH 6, LIPSCOMB 3

ATHENS, Ga. – Brad Feltes’ two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning helped Georgia Tech beat Lipscomb, 6-3, advancing the Yellow Jackets into the championship round of the Athens NCAA Baseball Regional at Georgia’s Foley Field.

Georgia Tech (41-19) will play either Lipscomb or regional host Georgia (those two teams play Sunday at 2 p.m.) Sunday at 6 p.m. A win Sunday night would send the Yellow Jackets to a Super Regional next week. ATHENS, Ga. — The Bisons of Lipscomb University were the story of the day, as the 151st ranked team in the RPI defeated the national #8 seed Georgia 10-7 at Foley Field. The win marked the first NCAA tournament victory for Lipscomb University in any sport.

Catcher Caleb Joseph, left fielder Blake Bratcher, and first baseman Ryan Wilkins each homered for the Bisons. Bratcher and Wilkins each had 3 RBIs for Lipscomb. Rex Brothers earned the victory for Lipscomb, giving up only 2 earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. Read the rest of this entry »

ATHENS, Ga. — Freshman Deck McGuire pitched 7 strong innings for the Yellow Jackets, giving up just 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 9, to help Georgia Tech (34-14) to an 11-1 road victory over in-state rival Georgia (31-16-1). McGuire improved his record to 8-0 on the season as the Yellow Jackets remain undefeated in midweek games.

For Georgia Tech, juniors Luke Murton and Charlie Blackmon both contributed 3 hits including a home run each. Team captain Brad Feltes hit an 8th inning 2-run homer to seal the victory for the Jackets. Read the rest of this entry »

ATLANTA, Ga. — Despite having the week off for final exams, the Yellow Jackets (32-13) were able to continue their hot hitting in a 10-6 victory over Coastal Carolina (36-10). Thomas Nichols, Charlie Blackmon, Jeff Rowland, and Jason Haniger each hit a home run off Coastal Carolina starter Bobby Gagg. Haniger, who led the team with 3 RBI, later hit a clutch 8th inning 2-run single to seal the victory for Georgia Tech.
