Share ATLANTA, Ga. — Georgia Tech took an early 2-0 lead off an RBI single from Derek Dietrich and a solo home run from Tony Plagman, but Miami’s offense proved to be too powerful for the Yellow Jackets as Miami came back to win 9-3. Hurricanes first baseman Yonder Alonso went 3-for-4 on the day with a home run and 2 RBI. Center fielder Blake Tekotte continued his hot streak, going 2-for-5 today and 9-for-15 on the series.
David Gutierrez pitched 6 strong innings for the Hurricanes to earn the victory. Georgia Tech starter Zach Von Tersch lasted only 4 2/3 innings, giving up 5 runs. Read the rest of this entry »

Share ATLANTA, Ga. — One day after the death of Georgia Tech pitcher Michael Hutts, the Yellow Jackets took the field and played 2 against the country’s top-ranked team. The combination of a distracted Yellow Jacket team and the potent Hurricanes offense led to two Miami victories, 10-5 in the first game and 15-5 in the second.
Center fielder Blake Tekotte led the Hurricanes, going 7-for-10 in the two games, scoring 6 runs. Second baseman Jemile Weeks and catcher Jason Hagerty both went 5-for-9 in the doubleheader. Share ATLANTA, Ga. — Junior DH Luke Murton went 4-for-5 with a home run and 3 RBI today to lead the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (26-7, 9-6 ACC) to a 9-4 victory over in-state rival Georgia Bulldogs (20-12, 9-3 SEC). Freshman SS Derek Dietrich added three hits, and freshman Deck McGuire pitched 5 2/3 solid innings to improve to 5-0 on the season. Georgia Tech remains undefeated against mid-week opponents.
The Bulldogs were led by shortstop Gordon Beckham who went 2-for-3 with a run and a walk.
Georgia Tech next faces Miami (27-3, 12-1 ACC) in Atlanta this weekend. Georgia returns to Athens to take on Kentucky (26-5, 7-5 SEC). Read the rest of this entry »

Share ATLANTA, Ga. — Chris Hicks earned his 7th save of the season to help lead Georgia Tech (24-5) to a 5-4 victory over East Tennessee State (6-21). The Yellow Jackets scored the first 5 runs of the game before the Buccaneers answered with 4 runs of their own, including 3 solo home runs. Luke Murton hit a two-run double to start the Yellow Jackets scoring, but 3 ETSU errors on a single play allowed Tech to score what turned out to be the deciding run.
Georgia Tech remains undefeated in mid-week games this season, but has a tough stretch of games coming up. They first head to Cary, NC, for a 3-game series against the North Carolina Tar Heels before returning home for a mid-week game against the Georgia Bulldogs and a weekend series against the Miami Hurricanes. East Tennessee State returns to the Atlanta area this weekend to take on the Kennesaw State Owls. Read the rest of this entry »

Share ATLANTA, Ga. — Georgia Tech scored 11 unanswered runs to rally back from a 6-2 deficit and beat the Buccaneers of East Tennessee State 13-6. Catcher Jason Haniger and first baseman Tony Plagman hit home runs for the Yellow Jackets. Charlie Blackmon and Brad Feltes added two hits each. Center fielder Jacob Fabry led the Buccaneers with 3 hits.
Game 2 of the mid-week series continues Wednesday at 6pm. Freshman RHP Brandon Cumpton (1-0, 4.88) takes the mound for the Yellow Jackets, facing ETSU’s senior LHP Matt McGahey (0-1, 6.91) Read the rest of this entry »

Share ATLANTA, Ga. — Georgia Tech hit 7 home runs today in a 17-4 victory over the Alabama State Hornets. Freshman shortstop Derek Dietrich went 3-for-3 with 2 homers and a double. First baseman Tony Plagman also had 2 home runs, and outfielder Jay Dantzler added 3 hits to lead the Yellow Jackets’ offense.
Brandon Cumpton pitched 6 strong innings to earn his first collegiate victory. Zeb Hilburn gave up 8 runs in 4 1/3 innings to take the loss for Alabama State.

Share ATLANTA, Ga. — Luke Murton hit his first two home runs of the season and team captain Brad Feltes added a grand slam to lead Georgia Tech to a 12-1 victory over cross-town rivals Georgia State.
Starting pitcher Deck McGuire moved to 4-0 on the season and helped the Yellow Jackets improve to 18-5 (5-4 ACC). Adam Knight took the loss for the Panthers, which fell to 14-8.

Share ATLANTA, Ga. — Starting pitcher Eddie Burns gave up only 4 hits over 7 innings and freshman Jeff Rowland went 2-for-3 with a homer and 2 runs to lead Georgia Tech to a 4-2 victory over the Duke Blue Devils in the second game of a 3-game weekend series.
Shortstop Derek Dietrich continued his hot streak, going 2-for-4 today. Jay Dantzler also added 2 hits for the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech’s pitching continued to dominate, preventing Duke from getting any extra-base hits.

Share ATLANTA, Ga. — Sophomore relief pitcher Andrew Robinson threw 4 scoreless innings to help Georgia Tech maintain a 5-4 victory over the Duke Blue Devils. Jeff Rowland, Charlie Blackmon, and Derek Dietrich added two hits each to lead the Yellow Jackets’ offensive attack.
Georgia Tech was aided by 3 costly Duke errors in the third inning, leading to 4 Yellow Jacket runs. Duke pitcher Andrew Wolcott (2-1) took the loss despite giving up only 2 earned runs. David Duncan earned the win for Georgia Tech and improves to 3-0. Read the rest of this entry »

Share ATLANTA, Ga. — Junior outfielder Charlie Blackmon drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 8th as part of a 4-RBI evening to lead the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to a 7-6 victory over the Mercer Bears. Freshman Jeff Rowland added two hits, and closer Chris Hicks earned his 6th save of the season.
