The Cal-State Bakersfield University baseball team will begin play in 2009 under Bill Kernan. The team will be compromised of 12 incoming juniors with 13 freshmen coming into the program. The Long Beach Press Telegram writer Bob Keisser has written an article previewing the 15 new faces around the Long Beach State program in 2009 and a potential lineup. The biggest name in the group is former Miami (FL) corner infielder Joey Terdoslavich who will be sitting out the 2009 season due to the new transfer rules. Andrew Gagnon who was selected in the 10th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates turned down a sizable bonus to play for the Dirtbags. He went 8-3 with a 1.58 ERA with Liberty High School in California. Five pitchers and eight position players make up the University of Miami baseball program’s 2008 signing class, as announced by UM head coach Jim Morris on Tuesday. The 13-member signing class includes nine players from South Florida, one from Central Florida and three from the state of Texas.

With 10 freshmen and three junior college transfers, the 2008 signing class is expected to make a big impact on the field as early as the upcoming 2009 season. Five of the 13 signees were selected in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft, including Chris Herrmann (Tomball, Texas), who was taken in the 10th round by the Baltimore Orioles. In addition to Herrmann, Harold Martinez (Miami) was taken in the 19th round by the Baltimore Orioles, Taylor Wulf (Santa Fe, Texas) was chosen in the 29th round by the Atlanta Braves, Scott Lawson (Grapevine, Texas) was taken in the 40th round by the Houston Astros and Daniel Miranda (Miami) was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 50th round.

With the start of the 2008-09 academic year, a group of 16 athletes has arrived on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi campus to join the Islander baseball program. Recently, head coach Scott Malone commented on each of the newcomers:

“Brett had a tremendous season at Wharton this past season. It was exciting to see Brett pitch at the top of the rotation all year. We hope he can make the transition to D1 and do the same for us.”

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State baseball head coach Rocky Ward announced, Monday, July 28 that he has signed three players from around the state that have the opportunity to make an immediate impact on the team.

Tomas Gutierrez joins the Aggies next season and is from Albuquerque, while Justin Cooper heads to Las Cruces from Roswell, N.M. where he played for Goddard High School and Jonathan Rodriguez, who hails from Carlsbad, N.M. joins both Gutierrez and Cooper in 2009.

Southern Miss incoming freshman B.A. VollmuthBiloxi’s B.A. Vollmuth figures to play a key role in Southern Miss’ bid to make a seventh consecutive appearance in an NCAA baseball regional next season.

The Golden Eagles finished 42-22 in 2008. They lost plenty of firepower in first baseman Trey Sutton, outfielder Drew Carson and third baseman Chris Matesich. Relief pitcher Tyler Conn, the nation’s leader in saves, also has moved on. Read the rest of this entry »

Other than College Baseball’s top eight teams in Omaha, most of America has turned their full attention to the ever turbulent summer. This means summer leagues, coaching movement and draft watching. Things are no different at Vanderbilt, which for the third straight year failed to escape the Regionals. But that doesn’t mean the summer has not been active already.

On the Cape

Vanderbilt features six roster members on teams in the prestigious Cape Cod League. Friend of the College Baseball Blog Jarred Amato (publisher of SportsVU, a Vanderbilt Sports Blog) traveled to Wareham to spend some time with Vanderbilt sophomore leftfielder Steven Liddle as he started his season with the Gatemen. The article, found here, is a great glimpse into the magic of the league and what it means to the players and the community proper. In the past 6 season, Vanderbilt University has become one of the thorns in the sides of those trying to recruit high school players committed to Coach Tim Corbin and recruiting coordinator Eric Bakich.  A recent NYTimes profile of Pedro Alvarez disclosed at least one of the secret strategies used by Coaches Corbin and Bakich (a tax planner and a thick three ring binder).  Commodore recruits are told to weigh the value of a Vanderbilt diploma against any potential signing bonus, which a tax planner brings down to earth with an analysis of taxes against the bonus, living expenses during the life of potential contracts and certain luxury purchases.  Read the rest of this entry »

Rivals.com division Rivals High released their first ever Top 100 High School Baseball Players this week.  The rankings (found here) are topped by Griffin, GA SS Tim Beckham (pictured left), a Southern Cal commit and probable top 5 pick in the upcoming draft.  Joining him at the top are Cooper City, FL 1B Eric Hosmer (Arizona State); Long Beach, CA OF Aaron Hicks (Southern Cal); Wentzville, MO P Tim Melville (uncommitted); and Santa Ana, CA P Gerrit Cole (UCLA).  The top five are widely speculated to all go pro after the 2008 MLB Draft. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Illinois coach Dan Hartleb announced the addition of four student-athletes to Illinois’ incoming class of 2008 Wednesday. Willie Argo, of Davenport, Iowa, Bill Charvat, of Elk Grove Village, Ill., Mike Santa Maria, of Des Plaines, Ill., and Will Strack, of Sycamore, Ill., will join the Illini in the fall of 2008.
