Lubbock, Texas – The Brooks Wallace National Player of the Year Award Selection Committee has named Florida State All-American catcher Buster Posey of Leesburg, Ga., as the fifth recipient of the award, which was presented in a national telecast (FCS) on Wednesday evening at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.

Posey conquered an elite field of 15 other semi-finalists and finalists including consensus All-American shortstop Gordon Beckham of Georgia and pitcher Brian Matusz of San Diego. .Lubbock, Texas - College baseball has narrowed to only 16 teams playing in the Super Regionals, which means the Brooks Wallace National Player of the Year “Wallace Watch” is down to 16 talented players. Twelve players on the “Wallace Watch” will not only take the field this weekend in hopes of securing a spot in the College World Series, but also a spot as one of the top three finalists in pursuit of this year’s Wallace Award. Lubbock, Texas – The field of candidates aiming for the 2008 Brooks Wallace College Player of the Year Award was reduced to 100 today, as announced by the College Baseball Foundation in Lubbock, TX. Brett Wallace (Arizona State) and Ryan Lavarnway (Yale) were 2007 semifinalists who are now in pursuit of this year’s award. Notable additions to the ’08 list include Buster Posey (Florida State), Josh Romanski (San Diego) and Sawyer Carroll (Kentucky). Our buddy over at BleedCrimson.net talked with Gary Ward and Rocky Ward about Gary being inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame two days ago. Gary is currently the assistant coach with the New Mexico State Aggies with his son Rocky as the head coach. Gary had a successful career with Oklahoma State from 1978-1996 then with the Aggies in 2001 and 2002 before turning the reins over to his son. Gary led Oklahoma State to 16 consecutive conference titles and 17 NCAA Regional appearances, and 10 trips to the CWS. He led the Aggies to the 2002 Sun Belt Championship as he finished with a 1,022-361-1 record which is fourth all-time. You can hear the whole interview by clicking here.
