We recently ran across an article out of the Seattle Times that talks about some of the best prospects for the 2009 draft. Larry Stone wrote the article where he talks with a CBB reader in Keith Law of ESPN and John Manuel of Baseball America. Both of them clearly state that Stephen Strasburg is the top player in the 2009 draft after competing on the 2008 Olympic team and lighting up radar guns during the 2008 collegiate season.  Gene Salazar- Assistant Coach-UT-Pan Am
The University of Texas at Pan American has narrowed their coaching search to four candidates. The most logical choice would be for Gene Salazar. Gene is currently the assistant coach at UT-Pan Am and has ties in South Texas. Salazar was a 4 year Letterman at St. Edwards University and was also the head Coach there from 1998-2002. St Edwards University is a DIV II school that is located in Austin, Texas. Coach Salazar served as the interim head coach of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball program this past season where he served as the recruiting coordinator in his first three seasons and assisted in all aspects of the day-to-day operation of the Islander program.

Brandon Anderson Named Assistant Baseball Coach At Temple
PHILADELPHIA - Brandon Anderson, an All-American and professional baseball player who played two seasons at Gloucester County College under current Temple head coach Rob Valli, has been named an assistant baseball coach for the Owls. Anderson is currently in his second season playing professional baseball for the Kalamazoo Kings of the Frontier League.
“Brandon has always been an extremely talented and highly motivated student of the game, so his transition from player to coach should be easy,” Valli said. “He will be an excellent coach and role model for our team.”

Gamecocks set to welcome new baseball stadium
“There will not be a more impressive college baseball stadium in the country.” Those are the words of Athletic Director Eric Hyman in reference to USC’s new ballpark that will be opening in time for this year’s season.
Carolina fans sorrowfully said goodbye to Sarge Frye Field last year, a stadium rife with countless memories of players, coaches and unforgettable games. Nestled right below the Roost, the Sarge was the home site of Carolina baseball for 29 great seasons.

The Cape Cod Baseball League has put out press releases for the rest of the awards for the season. The MVP of the league was AJ Pollock of Notre Dame. He ended up finishing second in the league in batting average while leading the league in Slugging Percentage. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina’s incoming crop of baseball newcomers was finalized at Friday’s midnight signing deadline when 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft selections shortstop Matt Harrison and right-hander Jimmy Messer elected to join the Tar Heel program and did not sign professional contracts.
Carolina will welcome a seven-man class to campus Tuesday for the first day of classes. Joining Harrison (Henderson, Nev.), Messer (Hudson, N.C.) and original signees Seth Baldwin (Forest City, N.C.) and Jacob Stallings (Brentwood, Tenn.), are recent additions Landon Adams, Jeff May and Ryan Norton.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - First round draft pick Allan Dykstra signed with the San Diego Padres about an hour before the Friday night deadline for Major League Baseball teams to sign players drafted in the 2008 MLB Draft. Senior Evan Ocheltree and incoming freshmen Austin Stadler and Daniel Marrs did not sign with the teams that drafted them and will play for Wake Forest this upcoming season. Due to a mixup by the Boston Red Sox, the ACC Baseball tourney has been removed from Fenway Park after a scheduling mixup between the Boston Red Sox and the Fenway Sports Group. The reason behind this is the fact that the Boston Red Sox gave the wrong dates to Major League Baseball and have scheduled games for that weekend. Read the rest of this entry »

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has signed outfielder Tim Fedroff, their seventh round selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.
Fedroff, 21, finished his 2008 sophomore season at the University of North Carolina where he hit .404 (115-285) with 78 runs scored, 22 doubles, 5 triples, 12 home runs, 71 RBI and 14 stolen bases in 67 games as he helped the Tarheels advance to the College World Series. The Flagtown, NJ native finished 3rd among all Division I players in the entire nation in hits (115), T5th in total bases (183), T17th in runs scored (78), 37th in average (.404) and T37th in doubles (22), while also recording a .542 slugging percentage and a .568 on-base percentage (1.110 OPS).

PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Andrew Carraway of the Hyannis Mets was well aware of the importance of his start on July 28 against the Wareham Gatemen. The Mets, who once stood alone atop the Cape Cod Baseball League’s West Division standings, had been scuffling and they desperately needed a quality start from Carraway, their 6-2, 200-pound right-hander from the University of Virginia, to remain in contention.
