CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Ben Bunting went 3-for-5 with three RBI and tied a school record with two triples, and No. 4 North Carolina got eight strong innings from its bullpen in a 20-4 win over Winthrop Wednesday at Boshamer Stadium. stony-brookCAMBRIDGE, Mass.– Fresh off their upset win over a nationally-ranked opponent and after taking three out of four in an America East weekend series, two Stony Brook Seawolves were named weekly award winners for the period ending April 12. Senior outfielder Michael Tansey (Valley Stream, N.Y./Holy Trinity) received Player of the Week accolades for the second time this season, while freshman right-handed hurler Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif./Crespi Carmelite) received Pitcher of the Week honors, also for the second time in 2009. North Carolina 3 East Carolina 1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina right-hander Patrick Johnson carried a no-hitter into the seventh against hard-hitting East Carolina, and the No. 2 Tar Heels held off a late rally for a 3-1 win over the No. 14 Pirates Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium. With the victory, Carolina (25-7) extended its current winning streak to nine over ECU (25-6).

Johnson (2-0) was masterful against the Pirates, who entered the night eighth nationally with a .361 team average. Over a career-best 6 1/3 innings, the Conover, N.C., native struck out a career-high 11, walked three and allowed just the one base hit in the seventh. He retired six of the final seven batters he faced via the strikeout and fanned two or more in four separate frames. Read the rest of this entry »

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.– America East baseball conference play got underway last weekend between the raindrops, and a trio of players earned league honors to start off the second part of the season. Vermont sophomore shortstop Matt Duffy (Milton, Mass./St. Sebastian’s) proved valuable at the plate to earn Player of the Week recognition. Binghamton lefty pitcher James Giulietti (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-JFK), another sophomore, received Pitcher of the Week honors, and Albany freshman first baseman Mike Tirri (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) was named Rookie of the Week. CAMBRIDGE, Mass.– Single-handedly responsible for two Hartford wins last week, Hawks sophomore infielder Bobby Gorski (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) was named America East Baseball Player of the Week for the period ending March 29. A pair of Stony Brook freshmen right-handed pitchers, Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif./Crespi Carmelite) and Nick Tropeano (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), received the conference’s Pitcher of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, after picking up two combined victories in the Seawolves’ 4-0 week. CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A trio of Ohio State pitchers, led by starter and winner Alex Wimmers (now 5-0), one-hit the No. 2 Miami Hurricanes and the Buckeye bats did more than enough to secure a 7-1 victory Tuesday before 1,755 fans at Alex Rodriguez Park. Ohio State, ranked 16th in the Collegiate Baseball poll, improves to 18-3 with the win while Miami, No. 2 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll, falls to 18-5. The Vermont Athletic Department put out a release today dropping the Baseball and Softball programs at the end of the season. This will impact five staff members and most importantly 43 student athletes who will lose their ability to play their respective sport. Baseball head coach Bill Currier is entering his 22nd season in charge of the Catamount program. I am currently trying to get a comment from Currier about the program being discontinued.
