Hempstead, NY-Hofstra University Director of Athletics Jack Hayes today announced the appointment of Patrick Anderson to the position of head baseball coach. Anderson, the 13th coach in the program’s 71-year history, replaces Chris Dotolo, who resigned in June.

Anderson, who served as an assistant coach at Hofstra for three seasons from 1998 to 2001, has spent the last eight seasons as a minor league hitting and catching instructor with the Kansas City Royals Professional Baseball Club. Read the rest of this entry »

VBL Week Seven Players of the Week

Max Most, Staunton, OF, Jr., Port Washington, N.Y. (Old Dominion)
Most was an on-base machine for the Braves, reaching safely in 20 of 29 plate appearances for a .690 on-base percentage. The ODU Monarch led the league with a .571 batting average, going 12-for-21 with two doubles. He scored seven runs, drove in four, and led the league with eight walks. Adding to his arsenal, Most also shared the league lead with six steals. For the season, he is batting .364 with 25 runs, 10 doubles, 15 RBIs, 21 walks, 19 steals, and a .447 on-base percentage. I know we don’t cover Minor League baseball in general but the 2008 USA Baseball Team was announced today with a bunch of players with collegiate experience in the last few seasons including one player who will be entering his junior season at San Diego State in the fall. Player of the Week: Nick Campbell (Bryant), Little Falls

Nick Campbell batted .375 (9-for-24) and compiled a .531 on-base percentage in eight games for the Miners last week. Campbell scored a team-high seven runs, drove in five runs, drew eight walks and tallied three extra-base hits. He reached base via hit or walk in seven of eight contests and he had three multi-hit and two multi-walk games. The Raynham, Mass., native had his best game against Amsterdam on July 5. He was 2-for-4 with three RBI, two walks, two stolen bases, one double, one triple and one run scored as Little Falls won, 11-5. Read the rest of this entry »

Lance Baxter, Staunton Braves, LHP, So., Silverhill, Ala. (South Alabama)
Baxter fired a no-hitter in Staunton’s 2-0 victory over Waynesboro on Thursday, July 5. The University of South Alabama lefty faced just one batter over the minimum in his complete-game effort, allowing runners to reach on a walk and an error with one of them picked off. Baxter struck out seven while firing the league’s first no-hitter since Paul Burnside of Winchester threw a perfect game in his first Valley League appearance in June of 2006. HEMPSTEAD, NY - Hofstra University Head Baseball Coach Chris Dotolo has resigned his position effective June 15, Pride Director of Athletics Jack Hayes announced today.

Dotolo, the 12th baseball coach in Hofstra history, took over the reigns of the program when the Pride joined the competitive Colonial Athletic Association in 2002. He completed his seventh season in 2008 with a 19-36 season record and a 7-23 mark in the CAA. In his seven seasons, Dotolo posted a 125-244-1 record. He is just the third Hofstra coach to win 100 games for the Pride, a feat he accomplished with a 10-9 win over James Madison on April 21, 2007, joining Jack Smith (179 wins) and Rich Martin (127 wins). Raleigh, N.C. - Reese Havens’ two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted South Carolina to a 7-5 win over James Madison in NCAA Regional action in Raleigh, N.C. on Sunday afternoon. The win eliminates JMU from the tournament and puts the Gamecocks in a game with NC State later this evening with first pitch scheduled for 6 pm at Doak Field. Carolina is now 40-22 on the year. The 40-win total marks the ninth straight season that the Gamecocks have recorded 40-plus victories, the only SEC school to accomplish the feat from 2000-08. UNC-Wilmington 15 Elon 11

CARY, N.C. - Trailing 11-4 in the ninth, UNC Wilmington exploded for 11 runs as the Seahawks eliminated rival and third-seed Elon with a 15-11 win on Sunday at the NCAA Cary Regional at the USA Baseball Complex.

The Seahawks ran their record to 44-16-1 and reached the regional championship game for the third time in four NCAA tournament appearances. UNCW will face top-seeded UNC Chapel Hill at 520 p.m. The Phoenix, meanwhile, concluded their season with a 44-18 mark. Read the rest of this entry »

CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 31, 2008 - Trailing 10-2 at the halfway point, James Madison fought back to outscore Charlotte 11-1 over the next two and a half innings and held on for a 13-12 win in an elimination game on Saturday afternoon in the Raleigh Regional of the 2008 NCAA Baseball Championship at Doak Field at Dail Park.

“I think that was a great college baseball game,” commented JMU head coach Spanky McFarland. “Obviously there were mistakes made by both teams, but you had two clubs that fought and clawed and didn’t want to go home. Elon 6 Mount St. Mary’s 3

CARY, N.C. - Ken Ferrer allowed just three runs over a career-best 7.2 innings pitched and Mike Melillo hit a two-run home run to lead the 29th-ranked and third-seeded Elon Phoenix to a 6-3 victory over the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers in an elimination game of the Cary Regional of the 2008 NCAA Baseball Tournament. The Phoenix upped its record to 44-17 while the Mountaineers ended their season at 21-34.

The win was the second-ever NCAA Division I Tournament win in school history. Elon defeated Mississippi State 5-4 in the 2006 Clemson Regional. Read the rest of this entry »

UNC-Wilmington 5 Elon 2

CARY, N.C. – Freshman Alex Hill went 4-for-4 and reached base five times while junior Brad Holt held Elon to six hits as UNC Wilmington topped Elon, 5-2, in the first game of the NCAA Cary Regional on Friday at the USA Baseball Complex.

The Seahawks (43-15-1), who advanced to the winner’s bracket game on Saturday at 5 p.m., picked up their school-record 43rd win and halted a brief 2-game losing skid. Elon, meanwhile, dipped to 43-18 overall and will play Saturday at 1 p.m. against the loser of the North Carolina-Mount St. Mary’s game. Read the rest of this entry »

The NC State Wolfpack will host a Regional this year in Raleigh NC. They will be joined by James Madison, Charlotte, and South Carolina. NC State has a record of 38-20 while going a respectful 18-11 in the ACC. James Madison comes in with a 38-17 record with a 20-9 record in the CAA. The Charlotte 49ers enter with a 43-14 record with a 19-8 record in the Atlantic 10. The South Carolina Gamecocks enter with a 38-21 record while being 15-15 in the SEC.
