 Ryan Bridges went 4 for 4 for the Gold team in Friday
Team Black takes a 2-0 lead in Purdue’s Fall World Series
Eric Charles scored the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by Eric Nielsen with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Black squad a 5-4 win over the Gold team and a 2-0 edge in the annual Black and Gold Series at Lambert Field on Friday.
After the Team Gold rallied to tie the game at 4-4 with a single run in the top of the ninth, Charles led off the home half of the frame with a double to the gap in left-center. He advanced to third on the first out in the inning and narrowly beat Ben Wolgamot’s off-balanced throw to the plate on Nielsen’s shallow fly ball to right for the walk-off win.

Three-Run Fourth Lifts Blue Squad to 3-1 Win
Blue Team Takes Orange and Blue Series with Victory
Sophomore second baseman Pete Cappetta drove in a pair of runs with a base hit in the bottom of the fourth as part of a three-run inning that lifted the Blue squad to a 3-1 win and a 3-1 series victory in the five-game Orange and Blue World Series. The Blue bullpen rose to the occasion, with freshman Corey Kimes, senior Aaron Martin and junior Billy Barrett combining to allow just two hits in three shutout innings of relief work.

Southern Illinois University began its annual intrasquad fall series Saturday at Abe Martin Field. The maroon team used timely hitting, good defense and a strong effort from its bullpen to beat the black team, 4-2, in game one.
The maroon team was out-hit, 8-4, but buried the black team with three extra base hits. Mark Kelly and Tom Cerven doubled and Tyler Bullock delivered a solo home run. Both Kelly and Cerven’s hits came on 0-2 counts.

Louisiana Tech Bulldog Baseball Sets Fall Schedule
For the first time in the Wade Simoneaux era at Louisiana Tech, the Bulldog baseball team will play four fall games against outside competition.
Simoneaux announced Monday that Louisiana Tech would play LSU-Shreveport Oct. 3, Panola Junior College Oct. 9, Grambling State Oct. 16 and Bossier Parish Community College Oct. 18.

Missouri State Releases Baseball Schedule for 2009
The 2009 Missouri State baseball schedule has been completed and includes a total of 55 games as the Bears move into their sixth season at Hammons Field. The schedule features 26 home dates and 29 road games, 15 games against teams that qualified for the 2008 NCAA Tournament and a three-games series with 2006 and 2007 national champion Oregon State.

Georgia State Announces 2009 Slate
Highlighted by home match-ups against two of their biggest rivals and coming off a school record 33-win season, the Georgia State baseball team announced its upcoming 2009 schedule on Tuesday afternoon. The journey back to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament begins with a four-game home series against Cleveland State on Friday, February 20th.

This is a first in a series of reports I will file leading into the 2009 college baseball season. I decided to start with some of the top power producers who had great 2008 seasons that didn’t get much press except from their local media and schools.

Jimmy Jackson has been hired as assistant baseball coach at Siena effective immediately, as announced today by head coach Tony Rossi. Jackson will work primarily with Siena’s catchers and outfielders.

Conor Gillaspie has become the first 2008 draft pick to make it to the Major Leagues as he was called up after the Giants September 6th game. He had an outstanding career with the Wichita State Shockers where he was selected by the Giants with the 37th overall pick. He ended up spending only 91 days in the minors. The Southern Illinois Salukis have announced a tentative 2009 schedule. They will open the season on February 20th when they take part in the Coastal Carolina tournament in Myrtle Beach SC. They will then play a single game against Tennessee-Martin before heading down to Stetson to take part in the tournament hosted by the Hatters. Mark Kingston of Tulane University will be leaving the school to head to Illinois State to become the head coach in the 2010 season. He will serve as the head coach designee in 2009 under outgoing coach Jim Brownlee. Kingston was a member of Rick Jones staff since the 2001 season and becomes the fifth head coach that served under Jones to become a head coach. Read the rest of this entry »

Wes Carroll will be named the new head coach of Evansville in the near future according to a report by tv station WFIE. Carroll has spent the last two seasons as an assitant at the school and will replace Dave Seifert. The full report from the TV station is available here.

PEORIA, Ill. — Elvis Dominguez, who has served as the head coach at Eastern Kentucky University for the last seven years and has connections to the Missouri Valley Conference that go back more than 25 years, has been named the 15th head coach in Bradley Baseball history. Dominguez, who replaces the retiring Dewey Kalmer, was introduced during a press conference Tuesday morning at O’Brien Field.
“First of all, we are extremely appreciative of the tremendous run and numerous contributions that Coach Kalmer has made during his nearly three decades at the helm of the Bradley Baseball program and now wish Dewey and Carol a wonderful retirement,” said Bradley Director of Athletics Ken Kavanagh. “We welcome Elvis and his family to Bradley Athletics and hope that they have a similar long run on the Hilltop.”

Playing in front of a sellout crowd of 2,763 at Cardines Field, the USA National Team defeated Newport 8-3 Thursday night.
