Freshman Patrick Claussen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning to force in the winning run as the Washington State baseball team defeated the Cougar Alumni 8-7 at Bailey-Brayton Field, Saturday.

With one out in the final inning, redshirt-freshman Joe Huwer singled through the right side off loser Garrett Kimbrel (2005-08). Freshman Erich Armstrong and Kyle Johnson each drew a walk to the load the bases before Claussen was hit.

Missouri State Releases Baseball Schedule for 2009

The 2009 Missouri State baseball schedule has been completed and includes a total of 55 games as the Bears move into their sixth season at Hammons Field. The schedule features 26 home dates and 29 road games, 15 games against teams that qualified for the 2008 NCAA Tournament and a three-games series with 2006 and 2007 national champion Oregon State.

Cory Barton Hired as Assistant Baseball Coach at ULM

Cory Barton has been named assistant baseball coach at ULM, head coach Jeff Schexnaider announced on Tuesday. Barton’s hire is pending approval by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors.

Barton joins the Warhawk staff after two seasons as an assistant coach at Memphis and a two-year playing career with the Tigers.

NICHOLLS STATE BASEBALL BEGINS FALL PRACTICE SESSIONS

With 15 returners and 23 newcomers, the Colonel baseball team took to the field for the first time this week in preparation for the 2009 season.

“I think we’ve had three really good practices to open the fall and the thing that is really evident about this team already is that we definitely have team speed,” remarked head coach Chip Durham. “We have position players who can really run and that makes us feel really good about being in a situation where, as we continue to develop over the fall, we really have a chance to play defense well.”

Longhorns announce fall Baseball schedule

Texas hosts games against Rice (10/19) and Texas State (11/02) and travels to Baylor (10/12) and Rice (10/26).

he Texas Longhorns will play four fall baseball games this season, including a pair at The Dell Diamond in nearby Round Rock, the team announced on Thursday.

The Longhorns host Rice on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 1:30 p.m. and Texas State on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 12 p.m.

This is a first in a series of reports I will file leading into the 2009 college baseball season. I decided to start with some of the top power producers who had great 2008 seasons that didn’t get much press except from their local media and schools.

My selections for this report, and upcoming reports, include players who are far from one dimensional. Arizona State will have a ton of options at shortstop in 2009 as they have eight players who had experience at the position during their high school or junior college careers. CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State baseball team returned to Goss Stadium Thursday, working out in two separate segments for their first day of fall practice.

“It’s good to be back on the field and see the team as we get ready for the 2009 season,” Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. “We have a great bunch of newcomers who will join a very experienced group of returners.”

Former University of Memphis pitcher Brandon Rowan has joined the Pitt baseball coaching staff announced head coach Joe Jordano. Rowan, who most recently held the head coaching position at Crichton College in Memphis, Tenn., joins the Panthers’ staff as a volunteer assistant coach.

“I am very pleased to have a coach of Brandon Rowan’s character and experience join our staff,” said head coach Jordano.

The University of Oklahoma baseball team reported for the first team practice of the fall semester on Thursday, Sept. 4.

The Sooners return seven position starters and 18 letterwinners overall from the 2008 team that advanced to the Tempe Regional Finals before falling to then-No. 4 Arizona State. Among those starters are Aaron Baker, Matt Harughty, Bryant Hernandez, Casey Johnson, Jamie Johnson, Tyson Seng and J.T. Wise.
