WEST POINT, N.Y. - Freshman Drew Constable (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) knocked in the winning run and Bison hurlers freshman Eric Jarrett (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) and senior Jason Buursma (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) combined for a two-hit shutout as the Bucknell baseball team defeated Army, 1-0, to advance to the Patriot League championship against Navy next week. ANNAPOLIS, Md. - After dropping the first game of Saturday’s baseball doubleheader, Navy starting pitcher Oliver Drake (So./Gardner, Mass.) tossed 7.2 quality innings to force a third and deciding game in the best-of-three Patriot League semifinal series against Holy Cross at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium. The Patriot League Conference Tournament starts up this weekend with Holy Cross heading to Navy and Army hosting Bucknell in best two out of three series to decide which team will advance to the conference championship series next weekend. Navy ended up taking three out of four games this season against Holy Cross while Army lost three out of four games against Bucknell. Center Valley, Pa. - Holy Cross claimed two of the four major Patriot League Baseball Major Awards on Thursday, while Bucknell and Army picked up the other honors. Patriot League Player of the Year honors went to Bucknell senior Jason Buursma, while Holy Cross sophomore Matt Shapiro earned Pitcher of the Year recognition, Army freshman Clint Moore garnered Rookie of the Year status and Holy Cross’ Greg DiCenzo was named Patriot League Coach of the Year. Center Valley, Pa. - After earning the top seed in this weekend’s Patriot League Tournament, Army reaped the benefits of its stellar season by leading all teams with eight selections on the 2008 Patriot League Baseball All-League Team. The team was voted on by the League’s six head coaches, who could not vote for their own student-athletes.
The Black Knights placed three players on the first team, while five garnered second-team honors. Bucknell followed Army with seven selections, while Navy had six picks overall and a League-high five student-athletes that received first-team honors. EASTON, Pa.-The Lafayette baseball team swept Sunday’s doubleheader against Stony Brook to take three of four in this weekend’s home-and-home series. Senior Kevin Reese earned his 15th career victory with a 5-1 win in Sunday’s opening game and the Leopards came out on top of a back-and-forth battle to take the second game 7-6. ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior Brendan Akashian (Lowell, Mass.) went 4-for-8 with a double and two RBIs while freshman Eric Oxford (Danavers, Mass.) went 3-for-8 with three RBIs and a double as the Holy Cross baseball team split with Navy in a Patriot League doubleheader, winning the first game 11-5 and dropping game two, 2-1. Gotham Baseball has put out there weekend recap for Week 9. They name Vin Avella of Wagner the Beast of the Week after going 7-14 for the week. He had a strong weekend against Fairleigh Dickinson where he hit two homers with nine RBI. WEST POINT, N.Y. – Cole White scattered six hits in the opener, and Matt Fouch and Kirk Porter combined on a three-hitter in the nightcap as Army regained a share of first place in the Patriot League standings by posting a pair of shutout victories against Lehigh, Sunday afternoon at Doubleday Field.
The Black Knights won the first game 5-0 behind the stellar pitching of White, then rode the dominant performances of Fouch and Porter to a 6-0 victory in the second game. The CBB made the trip to Worcester MA to watch the second doubleheader between Lafayette and Holy Cross on April 20th. The Crusaders entered the double dip in sole possession of first place in the Patriot League with a one game lead. In Game 1, The Crusaders sent senior left handed pitcher Matt O’Brien for his final scheduled start at Fitton Field as he took on freshman Zach Fritz. Both pitchers were largely ineffective throughout with Fritz lasting only 3.2 innings while giving up all three Crusader runs on three hits and four walks. Read the rest of this entry »

Our buddies over at Gotham Baseball Magazine have put out their weekly article about the Greater New York area baseball programs. The team of the week is Army after they took three out of four games against the Naval Academy over the weekend. The Beast of the week was Chris Simmons of Army who had a pair of three hit games and hit a homer in the week.
