(KANNAPOLIS, N.C.) – Drew Pomeranz (Ole Miss) broke the USA Baseball National Team (Collegiate) record for strikeouts in a game with 17 and pitched six solid innings to lead the National Team to a 15-1 victory at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in the opening game of a four-game friendship series against Guatemala. Pitcher of the Week: Rob Gariano (Fairfield)
The second Coca Cola Pitcher of the Week for the 2009 season is Harwich right-handed pitcher Rob Gariano (Fairfield). In a shortened game on the 26th, Gariano pitched a scoreless 5.1 innings and led the Mariners to a 3-0 victory over Hyannis. The Fairfield product fanned 11 of the 20 batters he faced, while surrendering only four hits. Gariano sports a 1-0 record and a strong 0.73 earned-run average, after giving up only one run in seven strong innings versus Orleans. Read the rest of this entry »

According to a report by Baseball American writer Aaron Fitt, Eric Bakich will be named the new head coach of the Maryland Terrapins on Monday. I personally have been a huge fan of Mainieri since 1998 when I attended the Big East conference tournament in Norwich Connecticut. You could always tell that Mainieri was destined to become a coach at one of the major powers in the coming years and finally got the chance at LSU. Yes, he made the College World Series at Notre Dame but to be the coach at such a baseball powerhouse like LSU was too good to pass up. Read the rest of this entry »

The LSU Tigers scored five runs in the sixth inning to break open a tie game and roll to an 11-4 victory over Texas in Game 3 of the CWS Championship Finals and claim the NCAA Division I Championship.
It’s the sixth national championship for LSU and the first under head coach Paul Mainieri. LSU ties Texas for the second-most national championships for any school, behind only Southern California’s 12 titles. It’s also the first national championship for the Tigers since 2000. The roster is headlined by shortstop and 2008 National Team member Christian Colon (Cal State Fullerton; Capey, Puerto Rico), and consists of five outfielders, six infielders, 10 pitchers, and one utility player. OMAHA, Neb. — Pitching and offensive power carried Texas to a third and decisive game at the NCAA Division I College World Series Championship Finals after beating LSU 5-1, Tuesday.
After an hour and 34 minute rain delay, Longhorn starter Taylor Jungmann pitched a complete game, giving up just one run on five hits and dealing LSU its first loss in the NCAA Tournament. Jungmann struck out nine while walking just two. Read the rest of this entry »
