SAN MARCOS – The Los Angeles Dodgers organization has agreed to terms with Texas State senior pitcher Josh Walter. The right-hander now becomes the third player from the 2008 baseball team to advance to the professional ranks, joining teammates Mike Hart and Thomas Field, who were both selected in the 2008 first-year player draft.
Walter signed June 27 with the Dodger club and went immediately to the Ogden Raptors, the Dodgers minor league affiliate in Ogden, Utah.
He made his first professional appearance July 1 against the Casper Ghosts (Colorado Rockies), pitching 2.0 innings and earning two strikeouts.

The 2008 Capital One/Southland Conference All-Academic Baseball Teams were released today by the league office as Texas State sophomore first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was voted Student-Athlete of the year.
A native of The Woodlands, Texas, Goldschmidt’s accomplishments off the field are as stellar as his achievements in the classroom. While maintaining a 3.82 grade point average in finance, Goldschmidt led the league in home runs (17), garnering the 2008 SLC Hitter of the Year award, falling one round tripper shy of tying Texas State’s single-season record. Donnie Watson of Stephen F. Austin will not be returning to the Stephen F. Austin program after a 25-29 overall record and a Southland Conference mark of 12-17. Watson led the Lumberjacks to a 71-98 record over the last three seasons after the program was reinstated after being dropped in 1995. HOUSTON, Texas - The St. John’s baseball team plated the eventual game-winning run in the top of ninth to defeat No. 9 Texas, 2-1, in the opening game of the NCAA Tournament’s Houston Regional. Senior captain Jeff Grantham plated the game-winner with an RBI fielder’s choice, while Carlos Del Rosario had the other RBI for St. John’s (42-14). Red Storm starter Scott Barnes earned a no-decision after allowing just one run and striking out four in 7.2 strong innings. With the win, the Red Storm set a new school record with 42 wins. Huntsville, TX – A 6 a.m. wake up call gave the Texas State Bobcats the extra push they needed to crush four Southland Conference Tournament records with in the 22-2 seven-inning run-rule victory over Texas-Arlington Wednesday morning at Sanders Stadium.
With the Bobcats first round victory, their next game is slated for 4 p.m. against the winner of East Division rivals Lamar and Southeastern Louisiana.
“The preparation for this game started long before we arrived at the field,” said head coach Ty Harrington. “Our focus was where it needed to be two days ago and I will be very surprised if that same focus isn’t there again after that performance.”
The shows stars came from Mike Hart pitching a solid six innings on the mound and holding UTA to just two runs off seven hits, and a defense that kept ten Mavericks stranded on base.

FRISCO, Texas - The 2008 All-Southland Conference Baseball teams were announced today by the league office as UTSA junior outfielder Michael Rockett was voted Player of the Year by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. Eleven member institutions compose the 2008 All Conference teams with league champion UTSA claiming the most roster selections with seven.
Rockett, a Sugar Land, Texas native, finished the 2008 regular season in the top six in seven league offensive categories including third in hits (84), second in runs batted in (68) and tied for first in total bases (149). A Collegiate Baseball Newspaper player of the week recipient, Rockett is the first Roadrunner to claim the Southland’s highest accolade since Mark Schramek in 2002 and just the second all time.
Texas State compiles three of the five first team infield positions with first base selection and Hitter of the Year honoree Paul Goldschmidt taking home dual honors. The only sophomore on the league’s first team list, Goldschmidt ran away with post season honor receiving 16 of 24 first place votes. The Woodlands, Texas native finished the 2008 regular season in the top-10 in eight offensive categories including the Southland’s homerun leader (17) and slugging percentage (.693).

FRISCO, Texas – The Southland Conference Baseball players of the week were named today by the conference office as Texas State junior Lance Loftin claimed his first and team’s third weekly honors. Pitchers Bradley Chovanec of UTSA and Matt Whitaker of Central Arkansas are recognized by league votes as the Co-Pitchers of the week. Chovanec is the first pitcher to win two player of the week awards in the SLC and Whitaker takes home his first and team’s only weekly award of the season.

FRISCO, Texas - For the second consecutive season the UTSA Roadrunners have clinched the top spot in the Southland Conference Tournament. UTSA locked up the number one seed defeating league rival Nicholls State, 5-2 on Sunday, May 11, marking the program’s second regular-season title in school history, and the first team to win consecutive titles since Lamar in 2003-04. UTSA makes its fourth straight league tournament appearance and won 38 games this season, the most since joining the Southland Conference in 1992, and the Roadrunners 111 wins over the past three seasons leads the SLC.
The first round opponent for UTSA was not decided until the last day of the regular season as Southeastern Louisiana took two of three in Nicholls State giving the Lions the seventh overall seed, moving Texas A&M-Corpus Christi into the eighth seed to face UTSA in the opening round in the Islanders first Southland Conference Baseball Tournament appearance.

WACO, Texas — Seniors Tim Matthews and Paul Miles made their final games at Baylor Ballpark memorable. Matthews tossed a three-hit shutout, and Miles was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI as Baylor defeated Stephen F. Austin 11-0 in seven innings Wednesday night. The Bears (30-22) finished the regular season 21-10 at home and improved to 26-0 all-time against Stephen F. Austin (24-27).
Matthews (5-1), who recorded the first complete game and the first shutout of his career, faced two over the minimum and allowed only four base runners all night. He tallied six strikeouts against only walk and retired 14 consecutive batters between Jeffrey Kello’s leadoff single in the third and Adam Bosley’s two-out walk in the seventh. After Bosley walked, Justin Roland ended the game with a single that hit Bosley between first and second; by rule, Bosley was called out, and the 10-run mercy rule was enforced.
