The University of Oklahoma baseball team reported for the first team practice of the fall semester on Thursday, Sept. 4.

The Sooners return seven position starters and 18 letterwinners overall from the 2008 team that advanced to the Tempe Regional Finals before falling to then-No. 4 Arizona State. Among those starters are Aaron Baker, Matt Harughty, Bryant Hernandez, Casey Johnson, Jamie Johnson, Tyson Seng and J.T. Wise.

New Orleans 18, Texas Southern 5

Johnny Giavotella was 3-for-3 with a home run and four runs scored, helping New Orleans eliminate Texas Southern from the NCAA tournament with an 18-5 victory Saturday in the Baton Rouge regional.

New Orleans (43-20) blew the game open in the bottom of the fifth, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring six runs to take a 13-2 lead. Read the rest of this entry »

A walk, a bunt attempt, a double-steal and a home run. That’s just the bottom of the first, when LSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first game of the Baton Rouge Regional. The homestanding Tigers broke loose again in the fifth and sixth innings, and Texas Southern got on the board in the top of the sixth with an Earnest Rhone home run. Alex Box was filled with 6,536 fans as LSU advanced in the winner’s bracket, where it will face the winner of the Southern Miss-New Orleans matchup Saturday. The SWAC Tournament champions will face the loser of that game in an elimination contest.

The LSU Tigers finished the season on a massive 20 game winning streak. They have a 43-16 record and 18-11 in the SEC this year. The number 2 seed in the Regional is Southern Miss who has a 40-20 record with a Conference USA record of 15-9. New Orleans picked up the three seed with a season record of 42-19 and 18-11 in the Sun Belt. The final team in the regional is Texas Southern who won the SWAC Tourney to get in with a 16-32 record while being 7-17 in the conference. Read the rest of this entry »

AUSTIN, Texas — Preston Clark and David Hernandez hit two home runs apiece to lead the Texas Longhorns to a doubleheader sweep of the Alabama A&M Bulldogs, 18-0 and 14-3, at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Wednesday evening.

Clark, who hit both of his dingers in the second game, went 4-for-5 with five runs and four RBI in the doubleheader. He also reached base on one walk and two hit-by-pitches. Tallahassee, Fla. - Baseball fans witnessed history on Monday afternoon on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium as junior Buster Posey played all nine fielding positions in Florida State’s 10-0 victory over Savannah State. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Jeremy Farrell’s two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning provided the No. 24 Virginia baseball team with the go-ahead runs in a 5-4 win over No. 2 North Carolina Sunday in a rain-shortened game at Davenport Field. BLACKSBURG, Va. - Junior centerfielder Blake Tekotte tied a school record with three home runs and Miami hit five home runs in a game for the third time this season as the No. 1 ranked Hurricanes (40-5, 21-2 ACC) won its 40th game with a 12-4 win over Virginia Tech (20-29, 4-21 ACC) Friday evening at English Field. TAMPA, Fla. - The University of South Florida baseball team lost, 10-3, to Bethune-Cookman Wednesday night at Red McEwen Field.

The Bulls drop to 25-21 overall while the Wildcats improve to 30-17.

Junior Chris Rey was 3-for-4 in the game with one RBI and a run scored, while junior Addison Maruszak added a two-hit outing to the Bulls’ offense.

Freshman Zach Pietrzyk made his longest start, and appearance, of his rookie campaign against the Wildcats, striking out two in his 4.1-inning outing. He allowed five runs from seven hits to take his second loss of the year. Read the rest of this entry »

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Northern Illinois baseball team could not snap No. 29 Notre Dame’s ten-game winning streak as the Huskies fell, 5-4, in front of a school-record 4,600 fans at U.S. Cellular Field on Wednesday night.

In a game that had four lead changes, the Fighting Irish (23-9-1) came out on top after a three-base Huskie error in the eighth inning allowed Notre Dame’s Ross Brezovsky to give the Irish a 5-4 lead on an RBI groundout.

The Huskies (15-17) plated two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead off an RBI single from Justin Behm (Downers Grove, Ill./North) that scored Pat Minogue (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central), who led off the game with a single to center. A sacrifice fly from Dave Reynolds (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) plated Jeff Thomas (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) for NIU’s second run. Read the rest of this entry »

We have some interesting Mid-Week games coming up on Tuesday which is highlighted by Clemson and Georgia playing a home and home series. The College of Charleston will play against cross town rival Charleston Southern while Alabama will play two games against UAB, Ohio State plays Toledo, Coastal Carolina will play against Wake Forest and Elon.
