The Gonzaga Bulldogs won the conference’s regular season and the subsequent post-season championship series to make the NCAA Tourney before bowing out after three games in the Fullerton regional.

Moraga, CA - There will be a number of new faces out at Louis Guisto Field next week when the Saint Mary’s College Baseball team begins fall practice. Head coach Jedd Soto brought in 16 student-athletes to compete for a position on the 2010 roster. The incoming class includes 10 pitchers, five infielders, two outfielders, and one catcher.

Share Baseball America recently put out their Top 25 College Baseball and High School Prospects for the 2010 MLB Draft. The college rankings are led by Bryce Harper who has received national attention for skipping his final two years of high school to play college baseball with Community College of Southern Nevada. The rest of the top five is Anthony Ranaudo from LSU, Deck McGuire from Ga Tech, Levon Washington from Chipola JC, and Chris Sale from Florida Gulf Coast. The rest of the top 25 is available below.

FULL 2010 SCHEDULE (PDF)
The Toreros’ schedule features yet another strong caliber of opponents, much like the 2009 season. San Diego will face 11 NCAA Tournament participants including the University of Oklahoma, Rice, Coastal Carolina, Gonzaga, Indiana, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton, Arizona State, San Diego State, and Fresno State to highlight USD’s schedule. The Toreros will compete in 26 games against this top competition.

Share San Diego head coach Rich Hill has announced coaching changes with former top assistant coach Eric Valenzuela heading over to cross town rival San Diego State. The biggest change sees Jay Johnson moved up to the top assistant position while Tyler Kincaid has been hired from Palomar College to take over the pitching duties. Ramon Orozco has been moved up to volunteer assistant coach while Nik Crouch joins the staff as the Director of Baseball Operations. We should see how the move by Valenzuela affects the San Diego program as he was very important in bringing some star players into the program which is highlighted by Brian Matusz and Josh Romanski.

Moraga, CA – Saint Mary’s College Director of Athletics and Recreational Sports Mark Orr, announced a contract extension for head baseball coach Jedd Soto. Soto, the school’s third winningest coach since 1968, has received a three-year contract extension, which keeps Soto under contract through the 2012 season.
“I’m very pleased to continue Jedd Soto’s leadership of the baseball program,” said Orr. “The progress this program has had under his leadership has been impressive. His ability to recruit and develop quality student-athletes is something I look forward to seeing him continue to do for years to come.

Share Head coach Chad Kreuter has put together what looks to be a challenging 2010 schedule for the USC Trojans. The Trojans will begin the season on the road at Cal Poly (Feb. 19-21) before the home opener at Dedeaux Field against UC Irvine (Feb. 23). USC will then take part in the UCLA Tournament against Oklahoma State, Vanderbilt, and UCLA (Feb. 26-28), followed by a mid-week road game at Long Beach State (March 2).

(San Francisco, CA) – Matt Hobbs has accepted the open pitching coach position at the University of San Francisco, as announced by head coach Nino Giarratano today. Hobbs comes to the Hilltop from UC San Diego, where he held an associate head coaching position for three years.
"We are extremely excited to have Matt Hobbs as a pitching Coach/ recruiting coordinator at the University of San Francisco," said Giarratano. "Matt brings great success, knowledge, and great work habits to our program. Matt will continue to help the program rise."

Share The Cape Cod Baseball League has put out their 2009 All-Cape League team. It is led by CCBL MVP Kyle Roller from East Carolina and CCBL Top Pitcher Chris Sale from Florida Gulf Coast. The infield features first baseman Mickey Wiswall (Boston College), second baseman Pierre LePage (Uconn), shortstop B.A. Vollmuth (Southern Miss) and third baseman Jedd Gyorko (West Virginia). The two ultility infielders are Zach Cox (Arkansas) and Nick Crawford (UAB). The outfield is led by Todd Cunningham (Jacksonville State). The other four members of the All-League outfield are Gary Brown (CS-Fullerton), Austin Wates (Virginia Tech), Brian Fletcher (Auburn), and George Springer (UConn). The catchers are Mike Murray (Wake Forest) and Cody Stanley (UNC-Wilmington). Ryan Cuneo (Delaware) joins Roller as the All-League Designated Hitters.

SEATTLE – Greg Moore has been added to the Washington baseball coaching staff, head coach Lindsay Meggs announced today. Moore, who will handle pitching for the Huskies, joins Meggs and Dave Nakama, who was named an assistant earlier this month, on the full-time coaching staff.`
Moore comes to the UW after eight seasons as an assistant at the University of San Francisco.

The Coca-Cola Pitcher of the Month for July has been awarded to Kyle Blair (Sand Diego) of Brewster. Blair’s record remains flawless on the season, winning three and losing none. Over the past month, the 6-3 righty has appeared in four games, all of them starts, and recorded 27 innings pitched. Over those 27 innings, Blair has surrendered only 12 hits and three earned runs, good for a 1.00 ERA. He also sports a 1.40 strikeouts-per-innings-pitched ratio, with 38 strikeouts this month.

MALIBU, Calif. – Jon Strauss has joined the Pepperdine baseball staff as the team’s new pitching coach, head coach Steve Rodriguez announced on Friday. Strauss replaces Sean Kenney, who is now the pitching coach at Maryland.
A Southern California native with close to 15 years of collegiate coaching experience, Strauss completes Rodriguez’s coaching staff for the 2009-10 season. Earlier this week, Rodriguez tabbed former Ohio State standout catcher Joe Wilkins to the volunteer assistant coach position.
“The Pepperdine and Long Beach State baseball programs both have a great history and winning traditions, so I’m confident the transition will be an easy one for Jon and that he’ll help us get deeper into the postseason,” Rodriguez said. “I’ve gotten to know Jon pretty well on the recruiting trail and I’m excited that he and his family are coming to Malibu to join the Pepperdine family.”
