SAN DIEGO, Calif. ­ The University of San Diego head baseball coach, Rich Hill, has announced the Toreros’ 2009 schedule.

The Toreros’ schedule features yet another strong caliber of opponents, much like the 2008 season. Eight NCAA Tournament participants including the University of Oklahoma, Long Beach State, Rice, Pepperdine University, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton, Stanford University and Arizona State highlight USD’s schedule. The Toreros will compete in 16 games against this top competition.

Steve Rodriguez and Pepperdine University have release their schedule. Pepperdine will start their season against the Cal State Northridge with the Friday and Sunday game at Pepperdine and the Saturday game at Northridge. Pepperdine will travel down to USC for a mid-week game on Wednesday the 25th of February. On February 27th Pepperdine will travel to Davis, California to Play UC Davis in a three game weekend series. They will then return to Los Angles to play UCLA in a mid-week contest. They finally get to return home to play in a four game series against Evansville. They will play a DH on Saturday.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. ­ Former University of San Diego All-American Brian Matusz has come to terms with the Baltimore Orioles, signing his first Major League Baseball contract.

Matusz, the fourth overall pick by the Orioles in the 2008 MLB draft and the consensus best pitcher available, received a $3.2 million bonus and a four-year major league deal as part of his contract with the Orioles. That bonus is the second-highest in this year¹s draft, trailing only the $6.15
million the Rays gave No. 1 overall selection Tim Beckham. The total value of the deal has yet to be reported.

Loyola Marymount University Athletics Director Dr. William Husak formally announced on Thursday that Jason Gill has been named head coach of the LMU baseball program. After serving as an assistant coach at LMU in 1999 and 2000, Gill, who has spent the last four years working under head coach George Horton at Oregon and Cal State Fullerton, will return to the bluff to become the seventh head coach of the Lions’ program.

“I’m excited to make my return to LMU, a program that has always held a special place in my heart,” Gill said.  “The people in and around the Lion family have always been supportive, and I look forward to re-joining that group as the head baseball coach.  I believe in the direction that Dr. Husak is taking the program and the Athletic Department, and I feel that LMU as a whole is structured and ready to win from top to bottom.  Upon reflecting on my personal experiences at the university, and talking to current and former coaches, it is extremely clear that LMU is destined for great things.  The bottom line is it is a great time to be a Lion.”

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. – Championship Series’ Most Valuable Player Ryan Nokelby (Texas Lutheran) plated Jeff Abrams (Binghamton) with a 10th-inning sacrifice fly as the Brockport Riverbats edged the Glens Falls Golden Eagles, 3-2, in 10 innings to win the 2008 New York Collegiate Baseball League championship. The College Baseball Blog made the long trek down to Chatham to take in the Cape Cod All-Star game. The East Division in front of 8,629 fans used a seven run bottom of the eighth inning to erase a 6-1 deficit and pick up a 8-6 victory in the Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star game. The game was dominated by the team’s respective pitching staffs with each squad having a pitcher blow up in an inning. The Western squad scored the first run of the game in the 3rd inning with an A.J. Pollock (Notre Dame) opposite field homer while Rob Poythress (Georgia) returned the favor in the fifth inning by hitting a ball back in the same general area in right field. LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Loyola Marymount University Athletic Director Bill Husak announced today that Frank Cruz has been released from his position as head baseball coach.

Husak said a replacement for the head coaching position will be announced in the near future.

“I want to thank Frank Cruz for his years of dedicated service to LMU as a head coach,” said Husak. “Frank can be proud of many of his team’s accomplishments in the past 12 years, both on the field and in the classroom. I know we don’t cover Minor League baseball in general but the 2008 USA Baseball Team was announced today with a bunch of players with collegiate experience in the last few seasons including one player who will be entering his junior season at San Diego State in the fall. Canada’s entry in the World University Games defeated the Lethbridge Bulls of the Western Major Baseball League 12-1 Wednesday night. RF Ken Fuglerud (Saint Mary’s) hit a two-run home run, went 2-3 with 3 RBI. 1B Marshall MacDonald (Dayton) also hit a two-run home run, went 2-4 with 4 runs scored. Aaron Fitt of Baseball America has put out his predictions for the 2009 College World Series. He expects two teams from the ACC in Miami (FL) and North Carolina to make it back to Omaha after strong 2008 campaigns. He has three teams from the West Coast to make it to the College World Series in Cal-State Fullerton, Oregon State, and the University of San Diego. HOUSTON — Aaron Crow of Missouri, Joshua Fields of Georgia, Chris Hernandez of Miami (Fla.) and Brian Matusz of San Diego have been selected as finalists for The Roger Clemens Award, which honors the top pitcher in college baseball. The winner will be announced this summer in Houston.

The four pitchers were selected from a field of 10 semifinalists in a national vote of all Division 1 head baseball coaches, selected national college baseball media, previous winners of the R. E. “Bob” Smith Award, which was presented to the top player in college baseball in 1988-2003, and the 13 previous finalists for the Clemens Award. Read the rest of this entry »
