CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia associate head coach Kevin McMullan has earned the 2009 ABCA/Baseball America Assistant Coach of the Year Award, the ABCA and Baseball America have announced. McMullan helped Virginia win an ACC Championship and reach the College World Series last season.
McMullan will be presented his award at an honors luncheon at the national coaches’ convention in Dallas on Jan. 9, 2010.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State head baseball coach Pat Casey and his wife, Susan, have been selected to receive the 2009 Nell and John Wooden Coaching Achievement Award from the World Sport Humanitarian Hall Of Fame.
The annual award honors a coach and spouse who have made exceptional contributions to their players’ lives and in the community. The award announcement came on Monday; it will be presented to Susan and Pat in a ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 24 at the Qwest Center in Boise, Idaho. The two will be given the award in a ceremony that will also include the induction of the NBA’s Adonal Foyle, MLS great Diego Gutierrez and world-class hurdler Tracy Mattes into the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame.

West Point, N.Y. – Veteran Army baseball coach Joe Sottolano has been named the ABCA/Diamond Sports Company NCAA Division I Regional Coach of the Year, it was recently announced.
Sottolano will be formally recognized when the American Baseball Coaches Association hosts its annual convention in Dallas January 7-10. The Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet is scheduled for Jan. 8.
Sottolano is being recognized following the Black Knights historic run to an NCAA Regional Final.

Share Legendary FSU player/coach and Kansas City Royals manager Dick Howser was honored by the Royals in a ceremony on Friday evening before the game against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Royals gave out bobbleheads to the first 20,000 fans while letting one of his twin daughters in Jana Howser throw out the first pitch. The NCBWA honors Howser by naming their Player of the Year Award after him which was won by Stephen Strasburg this season.

Share The Wall Street Journal has an interesting article about the success rate of players who win the Golden Spikes Award being more successful than players that win the Heisman Trophy Award. I think the reason behind this is that the best players in College Football do not fit the “system” at the next level being the NFL. In baseball, it is much different in that the best player in college is likely going to be able to hit/pitch in the MLB because the talent transfers over easier to the pro game. (Omaha, NE) – University of Florida infielder Brandon McArthur, a student-athlete who helped his team to the NCAA Super Regional after overcoming a serious injury his freshman year, has been selected as the winner of the 2009 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in the baseball division.
The award, chosen by a nationwide vote of coaches, media and fans, is presented annually to college baseball’s outstanding NCAA Division I senior student-athlete. OMAHA, Neb. – North Carolina first baseman Dustin Ackley, Arizona State pitcher Mike Leake and San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg have been named as finalists for the 2009 Dick Howser Trophy in balloting by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and in conjunction with the College Baseball Foundation, the Dick Howser Trophy committee and the St Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce.
The winner of the Howser Trophy will be announced in Lubbock, Texas, on July 2, during the inaugural College Baseball Awards Show, held at the United Spirit Arena and shown on MLB.com. The nationally broadcasted event will be followed by the College Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony on July 3 in Lubbock.

HOUSTON, TX – After leading his team to the program’s first appearance at the NCAA College World Series, Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor was named the National Coach of the Year by the National College Baseball Writers Association.
The award, which was voted on by the NCBWA Board of Directors, was chosen from a list that included all Division I Conference Coaches of the Year and the coaches of the eight NCAA College World Series teams. O’Connor, who was the only coach to appear on every voter’s ballot, received the honor Saturday morning at the Omaha Press Club.
