Stephen F. Austin baseball head coach Johnny Cardenas announced Monday that former Weatherford College pitching instructor Chad Massengale has been hired on to the Lumberjack coaching staff as pitching instructor, filling the team’s final coaching vacancy for the 2009 season.

“I believe Chad’s experience at the collegiate level as a pitching coach and recruiter will compliment our staff very well,” Cardenas said. “We look for our pitchers to benefit from his knowledge and experience.”

DALLAS, Texas - After finishing its historic postseason run with a 6-1 victory over Georgia on Wednesday night to win the College World Series, Fresno State finishes the 2008 season ranked No.1 in the final National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll.

OMAHA, Neb.—Buster Posey, Florida State’s slugging catcher and Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year as well as 2008 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic Baseball Player of the Year, is the 22nd annual recipient of the Dick Howser Trophy, presented by Whitney Bank.

The St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) selected Posey in a vote of over 300 members of the NCBWA and Dick Howser Trophy committee from an initial field of more than 700 nominees in 2008. Read the rest of this entry »

DALLAS, TX -The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) has announced today that its inaugural National Coach of the Year Award will go to Fresno State skipper Mike Batesole.  The award, which was voted on by the NCBWA Board of Directors, was chosen from a list that included all Division I Conference Coaches of the Year.

Batesole has led the Bulldogs (42-29) to their College World Series since 1991 and guided Fresno State to Omaha as the first No. 4 seed to advance to the CWS since the 64-team format was introduced in 1999.  He earned Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors for the first time after Fresno State won their third consecutive regular season WAC title.

LINCOLN, Neb. - A total of 56 standout college baseball players from every part of the country are featured on the 13th Annual Pro-Line Athletic National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-America Team, the organization announced today.

STARKVILLE, Miss. (NCBWA) - Five of college baseball’s top relief specialists have been selected as finalists for the fourth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, the NCBWA announced Thursday.

This year’s finalists include NCAA saves leader Tyler Conn of Southern Miss, Scott Bittle of Mississippi, Joshua Fields of Georgia, A.J. Griffin of the University of San Diego and Eric Pettis of UC Irvine. All five relief aces helped their respective teams advance to the 64-team field of the 2008 NCAA Baseball Tournament, which begins this weekend at 16 regional sites across the nation.

DALLAS - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association continues its tradition of NCAA Division I polls for the 11th year with its 2008 weekly surveys. Polls will be circulated from Feb. 25-June 30 following the NCAA World Series in Omaha, Neb. LINCOLN, Neb. — The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, working in conjunction with the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce, has released the list of 16 semifinalists for the 2008 Dick Howser Trophy, given to the top player in collegiate baseball. The membership of the NCBWA will choose the Dick Howser Trophy based on three rounds of voting. The 2008 winner will be announced just prior to the first game of the College World Series, with a press conference slated for Saturday, June 14, at 10 a.m. (CDT) at the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce. DALLAS - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) ­ released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending May 11, today. Coastal Carolina junior first baseman David Anderson was named National Hitter of the Week, while Long Beach State senior right-hander Andrew Liebel was named National Pitcher of the Week.
