Fighting Illini Wrap Up Successful Summer

A number of Fighting Illini finished their summer seasons with great success in recent weeks, as Casey McMurray’s Santa Barbara Foresters won the National Baseball Congress World Series, Joe Bonadonna and Brandon Wikoff finished second in the Northwoods League playoffs with the Madison Mallards and Nick Stockwell led the Lombard Orioles to a second-place finish at the Stan Musial World Series. Fort Wayne, IN - IPFW Director of Athletics has announced that Bobby Pierce has been hired as the Mastodons’ new head baseball coach.

Pierce comes to IPFW after a successful stint at Metro State College in Denver, Colorado.

Pierce led Metro State to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) tournament berths in each of his two seasons at the helm. The Roadrunners went 55-54 in two seasons under Pierce, including a 43-34 mark in RMAC play. Pierce and Metro State had an outstanding 2008 season, going 38-19, including 30-10 in league play. Reece Gorman and Jake Palmer each earned All-American honors, while 11 Roadrunners earned all-RMAC honors.

Hempstead, NY-Hofstra University Director of Athletics Jack Hayes today announced the appointment of Patrick Anderson to the position of head baseball coach. Anderson, the 13th coach in the program’s 71-year history, replaces Chris Dotolo, who resigned in June.

Anderson, who served as an assistant coach at Hofstra for three seasons from 1998 to 2001, has spent the last eight seasons as a minor league hitting and catching instructor with the Kansas City Royals Professional Baseball Club. Read the rest of this entry »

Jay Alexander of Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. — Jay Alexander, the head baseball coach at Wayne State University for the past six seasons, has been named head baseball coach at Eastern Michigan University, EMU Director of Athletics Dr. Derrick Gragg announced today. Charles Assey

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern Head Baseball Coach Stuart Lake has announced the hiring of Charles Assey as his assistant coach.

“I am just excited about this opportunity,” said Assey. “I have known Coach Lake for a long time and I think a lot of him as a person and as a coach. I know that this program can win, and I am ready to work hard to make it happen.”

Assey is the first coach to join Lake’s staff, and comes to CSU from his post at Presbyterian College. He will serve as the recruiting coordinator, third base coach, and will coach the hitters along with Coach Lake.

After a dominating 2008 season that saw the #1 ranked University of Miami baseball team win their first ACC title, the Hurricanes went home disappointed from the College World Series after being eliminated by the Stanford Cardinal. Miami’s bats went cold at the wrong time and their stellar pitching faltered leaving the Canes to trudge home from Omaha a tired and tattered team. Ironically, it was the baseball team and not the more recognized and popular Miami football team that won the Canes first ever ACC title in any sport since joining the conference. Young, a former Freshman All-America selection at Mississippi State , will take over as assistant baseball coach. The Georgetown , Texas native played three seasons for the Bulldogs, finishing in the Top-10 all-time list for relief appearances. He was also named to the 2001 SEC All-Tournament Team and the 2001 SEC Tournament Most Valuable Player.

RICHMOND, Ky. – Former Eastern Kentucky University infielder Jason Stein was named the school’s new baseball coach, EKU Director of Athletics Mark Sandy announced on Thursday.

A two-time All-OVC honoree for Athletics Hall of Fame coach Jim Ward from 1992-95, Stein later served as an assistant coach to Ward from 1998-2000. Stein comes to Richmond from Belmont University where he served seven years as an assistant coach, the last two as assistant head coach.

“To be able to return to my alma mater and coach on the field where I bled and cried as a player is unbelievable,” Stein said. “Every young coach wants the opportunity to take over a program with a history of excellence and winning championships. To inherit such a program to which I already have strong emotional ties is a dream come true.”

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Loyola Marymount University Athletic Director Bill Husak announced today that Frank Cruz has been released from his position as head baseball coach.

Husak said a replacement for the head coaching position will be announced in the near future.

“I want to thank Frank Cruz for his years of dedicated service to LMU as a head coach,” said Husak. “Frank can be proud of many of his team’s accomplishments in the past 12 years, both on the field and in the classroom. Mark Kingston of Tulane University will be leaving the school to head to Illinois State to become the head coach in the 2010 season. He will serve as the head coach designee in 2009 under outgoing coach Jim Brownlee. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Scott Jackson, who has extensive experience as an assistant coach throughout Southeastern college baseball, has been named an assistant baseball coach at the University of North Carolina, head coach Mike Fox announced Tuesday. Jackson, who joins the Tar Heels after one season at Liberty, will work with the offense, including hitting and base running, as well as infield play. NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin athletics director Robert Hill announced Wednesday the promotion of Johnny Cardenas as head coach of the Lumberjack baseball program. Cardenas had served as interim head coach of the `Jacks since the position became vacant in early June.

“Since his arrival here I have been very impressed with Johnny’s knowledge of the game and his ability to teach our players,” Hill said. “He has been our number one recruiter, too, and his eye for talent is top-notch. I have all the confidence that he is more than capable of making SFA a top program in the Southland Conference.”

Luke HowardARKADELPHIA – Ouachita Baptist University head baseball coach Chris Moddelmog announced Monday the hiring of Luke Howard.

Howard will assume the role of pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Ouachita Baptist. He comes to OBU after a one year stint at Murray State University, a Division I school in the Ohio Valley Conference.

“Luke will bring a lot of energy and excitement to our program. He is a good recruiter and a tireless worker on and off the field. I look forward to him and his wife Anne joining the OBU baseball family,” Moddelmog said.

(Charleston) - Former College of Charleston standout and South Carolina assistant coach Monte Lee has been named the Cougars’ head baseball coach, Charleston’s director of athletics Joe Hull announced Thursday at an 11:00 a.m. press conference at Randolph Hall on the school’s campus. Lee replaces John Pawlowski who was named head coach at Auburn on June 20, 2008.

Lee, 31, joins the Cougars after spending the past six seasons as an assistant at South Carolina under head coach Ray Tanner. He served as the Gamecocks’ recruiting coordinator last season. Lee also worked with the outfielders and hitters during his tenure.
