FRISCO, Texas – The Southland Conference Baseball players of the week were named today by the conference office as Stephen F. Austin outfielder Kevin Crabtree, A&M-Corpus Christi catcher Stephen Flora earn co-hitter of the week honors and SFA pitcher Lance Luetge is awarded his first honor of the season. Crabtree claims consecutive honors and his third of the season to lead the league marking the team’s fifth award behind 2008 regular season champion UTSA with six.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior shortstop Jeff Grantham of St. John’s has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week, while junior RHP Michael Hill of Cincinnati has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week.
Grantham was 10-for-19 (.526) in a 4-1 week for the Red Storm. He scored four times and drove in seven on the strength of three doubles and a home run. In Game 2 against USF, Gratham led off the 10th inning with a walk-off home run, giving STJ a 4-3 win.
Hill hurled a three-hit complete game in leading the Bearcats to a 7-1 win over Seton Hall. He surrendered only three singles and one run, while striking out a career-high 10 batters. Hill retired the final 13 Pirates he faced. He also became the first UC pitcher since 1999 to strike out four batters in one inning. Read the rest of this entry »

DENVER, CO - Fresno State outfielder Steve Susdorf and Nevada pitcher Derek Achelpohl have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for April 28-May 4.
Susdorf, a senior from Newhall, Calif. (Hart HS), hit .381 (8-for-21) with nine RBI, four home runs, six scored runs, two stolen bases, and a pair of walks as Fresno State split its series against New Mexico State last week. In an 11-8 series-opening win over New Mexico State, Susdorf went 4-for-5 at the plate with two home runs, two runs scored, six RBI, and a stolen base. With only two conference weekends remaining, teams continue to jockey for position in the league standings. Rice has a firm hold on first place, but just two games seperate second place Tulane from sixth-place Marshall. In-between them, Southern Miss, Houston and East Carolina are all tied for third. Several showdowns are on this week’s schedule, as Rice hosts Houston, Tulane visits East Carolina and Southern Miss welcomes Memphis. The other conference series features UCF and UAB, an important series to determine final spots in the C-USA Championship, as the ninth place team does not qualify for the double-elimination event. Austin outfielder Kevin Crabtree and A&M-Corpus Christi pitcher Omar Gutierrez are awarded weekly honors. Crabtree claims his second award on the year joining Mike Jaworski, Northwestern State, Trent Lockwood, UTSA and teammate Noel Trevino as the only players in the SLC to receive two player of the week awards. Gutierrez receives his first award of the season and the Islander’s third.

East Division Player of the Week
Kurt Davidson, Akron, C/1B, Sr., North Canton, Ohio (Hoover)
Davidson led the Zips to their first league series victory on the road since 2005 as UA took two of three at Miami this weekend. Including a non-league game against Cleveland State, the senior hit a robust .529 (9-for-17) with 10 RBI, five doubles and a pair of home runs to post a slugging percentage of 1.176 in four games. Additionally, behind six walks, Davidson notched a team-leading on-base percentage of .667 and reached base five times in Sunday’s series finale. During the Zips’ huge offensive weekend, the slugger, who became the school’s all-time home run leader last spring, took the career leads for at-bats, RBI and total bases to further establish himself as one of the greatest hitters to come through the UA program. Austin outfielder Noel Trevino and UTSA pitcher Ryan Proudfoot are awarded weekly honors. Trevino claims his second award on the year joining Mike Jaworski, Northwestern State and Trent Lockwood, UTSA as the only players in the SLC to receive two player of the week awards. Proudfoot is the third UTSA pitcher to receive the weekly award marking the fifth consecutive for UTSA.

A pair of freshmen have been honored as the Conference USA Baseball Players of the Week. After a highly-productive week that included leading his team to a conference series victory on the road, Marshall freshman designated hitter Victor Gomez has been named Conference USA Hitter of the Week.
