Demons sign two to complete ‘09 signing class

Northwestern State baseball head coach J.P. Davis has announced the signing of his final two players for the 2009 season – right handed pitcher Carlos Maese and catcher Daniel Qualls.

Maese, a 6-1, 180-pounder from Ysleta High School in El Paso, Texas, earned most valuable player honors of his district as well as being named to the all-academic team.

Pitching Coach- Stan Phelps - UT-Tyler

Stan Phelps and Wes Davis, assistant coaches for The University of Texas at Tyler baseball team, were named the coaches of the year in their respective minor leagues following the completion of the 2008 season.

Phelps, who served as head coach of the East Texas Pump Jacks, earned the honor in the Texas Collegiate League, while Davis picked-up the nod in the Coastal Plain League for his work as head coach with the Florence RedWolves.

The Corvallis (OR) Knights swept a best-of-three series against the Wenatchee (WA) AppleSox to win their first West Coast Collegiate Baseball League championship. The AppleSox won the championship in 2006 and 2007.

The Knights won the first game of the series 6-4 (11 innings) in Wenatchee. The star of that game was Doug Cherry (Washington), who went 4-5, reached base six times, and was spectacular on defense. He drew a walk in the ninth to bring in the tying run and send the game into extra innings. Bryant Kraus (Portland) batted in the winning run in the 11th. The Cape Cod Baseball League has put out press releases for the rest of the awards for the season. The MVP of the league was AJ Pollock of Notre Dame. He ended up finishing second in the league in batting average while leading the league in Slugging Percentage. Jimmy Cesario of Houston ended up winning the Batting title before signing a MLB deal with the Colorado Rockies. Read the rest of this entry »

The Okotoks Dawgs (AB) won their second straight Western Major Baseball League championship on August 16, winning three games out of four against the Swift Current (SK) Indians.

The final game, in Okotoks, drew a crowd of over 2,700; the Dawgs have a new ballpark, and have been drawing good crowds all year. The Dawgs continued to get excellent pitching during the final round. Mark Hardy (British Columbia) pitched a complete-game one-hitter in a 1-0 win. Jake Bottari (College of Idaho) held the Indians to one run in seven innings in another game.

Swift Current’s win was a 1-0 14-inning thriller. Sean Cooley (North Dakota; 8 1/3 innings, 6 hits) and Shawn Lee (Bellevue; 5 2/3 innings, 2 hits, eight strikeouts) combined for the shutout. Jeff Duda (Campbellsville) pitched twelve shutout innings for the Dawgs. Duda was 7-3, 1.88 ERA for the season.

Mike Ford pitched a complete-game shutout to win his third game of the tournament and Andre Miller drove in both runs as the Santa Barbara (CA) Foresters shut out the Seattle (WA) Studs 2-0 to in the championship of the 74th National Baseball World Series.

The Foresters (7-0) won their second title in the past three years; like in 2006, Santa Barbara went undefeated in winning the title.

Semifinal:Seattle Wins Rematch With Beatrice; Earns Another With Santa Barbara In Finals

The semifinal game of the 74th National Baseball Congress World Series pitted two teams that met in the fourth round of the tournament: Seattle (WA) and Beatrice (NE).The Studs won the first meeting on Aug. 11 (2-0), and they prevailed in this one 4-1 to reach the championship round. Seattle will visit again with Santa Barbara (CA), a team they lost to 11-5 on Aug. 12.
