DURHAM, N.C.-Louisiana State and Texas lead all schools by placing five players apiece on Baseball America’s top prospects lists for 19 different summer college leagues and Team USA. It’s the second straight year Texas has placed five players on BA’s summer lists. Read the rest of this entry »

 Pitching Coach- Stan Phelps - UT-Tyler

Stan Phelps and Wes Davis, assistant coaches for The University of Texas at Tyler baseball team, were named the coaches of the year in their respective minor leagues following the completion of the 2008 season.
Phelps, who served as head coach of the East Texas Pump Jacks, earned the honor in the Texas Collegiate League, while Davis picked-up the nod in the Coastal Plain League for his work as head coach with the Florence RedWolves.

While the regular season ended in May, several Golden Panthers are still taking swings and toeing the rubber as they take part in summer ball.
Tyler Townsend has led the way this summer, putting up terrific numbers for the Winchester Royals of the Valley Baseball League. FIU’s leading home run hitter in 2008 has posted a .405 average while slugging 11 homers, hitting 12 doubles, driving in 34 and getting on base at a .512 clip. Townsend’s outstanding numbers earned him an All-Star nod.

Sophomore outfielder Austin Newell and junior pitcher Lex Wolfe of The University of Texas at Tyler baseball team were both named to the Wolff Division All-Star team and will play in the 2008 Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League All-Star game on July 28. Patriots’ assistant coach Wes Davis will be making an all-star appearance as well, coaching the American team in the 2008 Coastal Plain League All-Star game on July 21.
Wolfe currently has a record of 1-2 for the Jersey Pilots with one save over 47.0 innings pitched. The right-hander from New Jersey has struck out 45 batters this summer and has allowed just 12 earned runs for an ERA of 2.30.

Coastal Plain League
Playing for the Fayetteville (N.C.) Swap Dogs, sophomore-to-be Jason King went 6-for-23 last week to raise his average… King’s best game came on Thursday in an 8-4 victory against Martinsville as he went 3-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI… King’s average now sits at .257 with six doubles, two triples, one home run and 10 RBI… Another future sophomore, Carter Jurica, went 1-for-17 last week, lowering his season average to .219 with three doubles and 14 RBI… His lone hit of the week also came against Martinsville on Thursday… The Swap Dogs, who finished the first half of the season in second place in the south division, is off to a 4-5 start to the second half.

(COLUMBIA, S.C.) – Kentrail Davis (Tennessee; Theodore, Ala.) blasted a three-run homer over the centerfield wall with two outs in the top of the eighth, igniting a late-inning rally that gave the USA Baseball National Trials Team a 7-2 victory over the Columbia Blowfish of the Coastal Plain League in Sunday night’s action at Capital City Stadium. (FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - Mike Leake’s two-run, pinch-hit single in the top of the eighth inning gave the USA Baseball National Trials Team the insurance it needed in a 3-0 victory over the Fayetteville SwampDogs of the Coastal Plain League in Friday night’s action at J.P. Riddle Park.
With the bases loaded, one out and the National Trials Team leading 1-0, Leake (Arizona State; Fallbrook, Calif.) ripped the first pitch he saw from SwampDog reliever Jeff Ibarra through the right side of the infield. That plated Christian Colon (Cal State Fullerton; Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), who led off the inning with a walk, and Kentrail Davis (Tennessee; Theodore, Ala.), who followed with a walk.
